Kakai pumpkins to jack-o-lanterns to delicious, roasted pepitas. 🎃 This was my first year growing this heirloom variety, and it is hands-down the best I’ve found for pepitas. The seeds are hull-less and can be eaten raw or roasted. I washed, dried, covered them in sea salt, butter, and brown sugar, and then roasted this lot on 175C for 15-20 minutes. 10/10 recommend adding this one to your to-grow list! 🎃

The leaves are all changing, the tall grass has faded to different shades of brown, and the bright colours of our cutting garden and hydrangea borders have softened and antiqued. There’s still an abundance of life out there this time of year, though, and the ladybird nymphs, hoverflies, and variety of bees living amongst my spent dahlias are thankful that I’m waiting to cut my spindly and slowly-mildewing plants down. I’ll leave the foliage a bit longer to see these garden friends through. While deadheading, I also been out collecting seed heads to dry in my already over-crowded shed. Autumn colour is fantastic, but having an abundance of seeds to plant next year is one of my favourite autumn gifts.

I’ve found my son’s favourite garden task - shelling beans. He was excited about all the treasures inside, especially any time he found a fully black bean. The kids picked 12 of the best to plant on our arch again next year.

It’s not the first year we’ve had a stellar pumpkin harvest, but I think I appreciate it more this year than in the past. This summer, the patch was my husband’s pride and joy. He and I watered, mulched, mowed, and showed it off when friends came to visit. The kids shared in the excitement when new pumpkins turned orange as we dreamed about turning them into all sorts of spooky jack-o-lanterns and tasty soups. We harvested the final lot before the latest storms rolled in, and now our front porch is lit up with orange, yellow, and green. We will honour Autumn by carving some of these beauties (including the big guy my husband and I are holding, affectionately nicknamed The Beast) on Samhain night.
