🌿Ty’s Plant Pick of the Week🌿

Physocarpus opulifolius⁃ A common ninebark.
This shrub is native to the northeast and is known for its exfoliating bark, light pink buds open to white flower and maintains beautiful seed heads into the fall. Deer resistant as well as resistant to most landscape pests. Growing 8’ to 10’ tall and wide it’s a great choice for screening!

Viburnum var. 'Shasta' Doublefile viburnum (Viburnum plicatum var. tomentosum 'Shasta') is a very popular deciduous shrub known for its tiered horizontal branching ,it produces profures arrays of pure white, lacecap-style flowers in spring that provide red berries in the fall. Deer resistant. Hearty.

Baptisia australis- false indigo
This is a native plant to the North eastern United States and ranges across other parts of the United States and abroad. The local Native Americans used this plant for various things. The two most common known uses by local natives were for its indigo colored flowers and its seed heads . The true indigo colored flowers were used to extract natural blue dye from, and was the most common use . Secondary to that was the use of the seed pods for entertaining infants, and children as rattles . In late fall the seed pods collected once dry become a true rattle. Hence the common name rattle box. I have to give credit for that information to a teacher I had in college Mrs Emmons. The plant also had medicinal value for nausea, tooth aches, and indigestion.
Baptisia australis I use frequently in the gardens we design at Pondside. Whenever you can use a native that is a home run every time you plant it, why wouldn’t you use it repeated throughout your gardens? This plant also is a legume and affixes nitrogen, native pollinator, has a deep tap root and helps break up poor compacted soils … winner!! Hope this helps you look closer at any Baptisia next time your plant shopping. They come in a variety of colors and sizes besides the original.

Viburnum 'Willowwood' a cultivar of Leatherleaf Viburnum, a semi-evergreen fast growing large shrub ( 12’ x 12’ ) In spring produces abundant creamy white, flowers that give way to red fruits. Glossy dark green leaves turn brown in winter but provide year-round interest, and screening. Deer resistant, hardy shrub w ability to be hedged.
