🍯 Why do so many Indianapolis families keep local honey in the pantry?

As we move toward late summer and early fall, plants like ragweed, mugwort, and other late-season weeds begin releasing pollen across Central Indiana. If you’ve noticed itchy eyes, sneezing, or a scratchy throat, you’re definitely not alone.

Here’s why local honey is a favorite this time of year:

🐝 Support Local Beekeepers
Every jar supports Indiana beekeepers and the pollinators that help our gardens, flowers, and farms thrive.

🌼 Pure, Minimally Processed Honey
Raw local honey is prized for its rich flavor and natural character, making it a delicious alternative to refined sweeteners.

🍂 A Seasonal Tradition
Many Hoosiers enjoy local honey as part of their fall wellness routine during ragweed season. While research hasn’t shown that local honey prevents or treats seasonal allergies, it’s a long-standing local tradition—and a sweet way to support your community.

Our favorite ways to enjoy it:
🍞 Spread over warm buttered toast
☕ Stir into a cozy cup of tea
🥄 Or savor a spoonful whenever you’re craving something naturally sweet.

Stop by Agrarian this weekend to stock your pantry with local Haldale Honey before allergy season is in full swing! 💛

🐔🌿 Agrarian's Choice: Our Favorite Chicken Litter Sifter Scoop

Backyard chicken keepers know that having the right coop tools can make daily cleanup so much easier.

After testing different options around the homestead, this litter sifter scoop is Agrarian's top pick for fine bedding.

✔️ Quickly sifts droppings while letting clean bedding fall back into the coop
✔️ Helps extend the life of your bedding
✔️ Makes spot cleaning faster, easier, and less wasteful

One thing to know before you buy: this scoop works best with fine bedding. Try it with h**p, fine pine shavings, sand, and our personal favorite - Brewed Bedding! It isn't the ideal choice for straw or large wood shavings, where the openings can clog or make sifting less effective.

We love sharing products that we've actually put to work around the homestead, and this one has earned a permanent place in our coop-cleaning routine. 🌱🐓

Want to try it out yourself? Come in to get one this weekend!

💬 What type of bedding do you use in your coop? Let us know in the comments!

🌿🐔 Turn your garden harvest into healthy chicken treats!

Summer gardens are overflowing, and your flock is happy to help with the extras. Fresh garden treats provide enrichment, help reduce food waste, and add variety to your chickens' day.

Here's how to serve them safely:

🥒 Zucchini – Slice into rounds, shred, or cut in half so your flock can peck out the center.

🥕 Carrot Tops – Offer whole in small bunches or chop them into bite-sized pieces.

🍅 Tomatoes – Feed only ripe tomatoes. Slice larger tomatoes and avoid the leaves, stems, and green fruit.

🥒 Cucumbers – Cut lengthwise or into thick slices for easy pecking.

🥬 Leafy Greens – Hang a whole head of lettuce or bundle greens to encourage natural foraging and reduce waste.

🌿 Fresh Herbs – Scatter basil, parsley, oregano, mint, or thyme around the run for enrichment and natural pecking.

🍉 Watermelon – Cut in half and let your flock clean out the fruit. They'll even peck at the rind!

🎃 Summer Squash – Slice into thick rounds or split in half.

💛 Remember: Garden treats should make up no more than about 10% of your chickens' diet. A quality layer feed should always be their main source of nutrition.

🌱 What garden treat disappears the fastest in your flock?

Keeping chickens cool in July 🐓☀️

Indianapolis chicken keepers know this heat is no joke.

If you’re raising backyard chickens, chicks, or a small homestead flock in central Indiana, try some of these:

Tip 1: Freeze gallon jugs of water
Place them near the brooder, coop, or shaded run so your chicks can cool off nearby.

Tip 2: Make a cool-foot station
Put a paving stone in a shallow tray of cool water. The stone stays cool, and chicks can stand on it to cool down through their feet. Keep it shallow, shaded, and easy for them to step away from.

Tip 3: Chilled or Frozen Treats
Watermelon from the fridge helps keep your flock both cool and hydrated. You can also try freezing smaller fruits like strawberries and blueberries in ice cubes to give them a cool treat with an added enrichment bonus!

Remember not to overdo it on treats, and of course, the basics go a long way to helping your flock handle the heat - clean water, shade, ventilation and a dust bath.

With temps heading into the 90s this week, try these and let us know how they work. What oher tips do you have for keeping your flock cool when the weather gets hot? Share them in the comments!
