Six shovels, one very patient kangaroo banner, and a project that’s been years in the making.

Yesterday we broke ground on the new UMKC Conservatory Expansion. Renderings like this only mean something once real people are experiencing this new building. Soon a parking lot will be transformed into student learning spaces and a campus landscape with gathering lawns, native plantings, and overlooks.

Grateful to everyone on that stage and everyone who isn’t in frame — the engineers, the university team, the students whose feedback actually shaped this design.

What’s a groundbreaking or ribbon-cutting you’ve watched turn from render to reality?

This hand-sketch study quickly explored the adaptive reuse of a historic bridge, transforming industrial infrastructure into an active public realm. The design plays with the existing geometric grid of the structural spans to weave together a sequence of active and passive programming. By creating a fluid pedestrian corridor, the layout draws visitors from terminus to terminus while framing dedicated vantage points to experience sunrises and sunsets over the river below.

This site plan sketch demonstrates how a tight footprint can gracefully accommodate a complex residential program. The design carefully layers multiple outdoor rooms into a cohesive narrative, integrating an entry garden, dedicated sculpture terraces, a shaded bosque lounge, and an expansive sun deck that integrates an infinity-edge pool. By utilizing clean geometric lines and strategic structural zoning, the layout maximizes functional space while maintaining a sophisticated, modern aesthetic.

This 3D study explores the spatial dynamics of an outdoor dining plaza designed to serve a mixed-use office tower. The gathering space is framed by an elegant overhead shade structure, creating a comfortable microclimate for patrons. Layered tropical plantings, mature palms, and structured planter pots define the sub-spaces, bringing texture, privacy, and a human scale to the building's urban interface.

This urban design study outlines a vision for a Reconnecting Communities initiative that focuses on repairing a fractured historic street grid. The master plan introduces contextually sensitive infill housing and urban development to restore neighborhood continuity, anchored by a prominent new central green space. This public landscape serves as both an active civic asset and a welcoming gateway into the revitalized district.

These concept alternatives explore layouts for an elevated rooftop terrace, focusing on a flexible program that accommodates both large social events and intimate gatherings. The spatial organization utilizes raised, integrated planters filled with lush, native grasses to subdivide the deck into distinct outdoor rooms without obstructing panoramic views of the sea and sound.

By layering programmatic zones with soft, textural plantings, the design options create a protected yet expansive amenity space tailored to its tropical context.

Nested within a rolling oak-hickory woodland, this residential master plan prioritizes seamless integration with the existing topography. The design features a terraced garden that maximizes views and offers direct connections to an adjacent regional trail system. A central gathering lawn is strategically positioned on the site’s natural level plateau, providing a functional anchor within the restorative forest setting.
