The Pale Purple Coneflower (Echinacea pallida) is officially classified as "Threatened" within Tennessee. PPC is highly attractive to native bees, butterflies and hummingbirds, but because of the loss of natural prairie and glade habitats due to development and agricultural expansion, the numbers are dwindling. We pay attention to the native plants that are on the Of Special Concern list. These plants require careful monitoring because they are either uncommon OR they have unique or highly specific habitat requirements. While this is the lowest level of alert, it can be elevated quickly due to urban sprawl or other circumstances. We plan to have some of these plants at our Fall Pop-Up Sale.

Tennessee is home to a diverse collection of native plants. Unfortunately, some of these plants are in danger of becoming extinct. The home landscape is a great place to incorporate these protected species to allow them to flourish. Our TN Native Plant Sale project leader, Debbie Williams, encourages us to plan and champion as many native plants as possible.

Wow - look at that! Showy Tickseed (Bidens aristosa) is blooming at Sadie's Native Nursery (our Master Gardener native plant nursery where we grow the plants for our TN Native Plant Sale). We will have this lovely native plant at our Fall Pop-Up Sale. It is called "showy" for a good reason - it produces vibrant golden daisy-like flowers from late summer to fall. Don't worry about the "tickseed" name. It's only called that because the little seeds look like ticks and they like to travel/reseed by sticking themselves to animal fur or the pant legs of passersby. It is perfect for an area that likes to hold water or an area that has meadow-like potential. It prefers full sun and pollinators love it. It is a late-season favorite of the migrating monarch!
