Halloween is Saturday and the clocks fall back Sunday, so expect more kids and more drivers out after dark. A few reminders from our crews: watch for kids crossing between parked cars and in driveways, turn your headlights on a little earlier, and give work zones extra room by following posted speeds and flaggers.

Fall parking lot checklist: three drainage spots to check before the first freeze.

Start with the catch basins and curb inlets, which get buried fast after a windy day. Then check any downspouts that empty onto your lot, and look for low spots where puddles hang around a day or two after rain.

If water still isn't draining after you've cleared the leaves, it's worth a closer look before winter. Save this for your next walk-through!

Cooler nights are on the way, which makes fall a good time to plan ahead for sealcoating and striping in Middle Tennessee.

Sealcoat and line paint need warmer temperatures to cure properly, with a general rule of thumb of about 50°F or above, including overnight temperatures. As cooler nights become more consistent, the window for this type of work can start to narrow.

That’s why we encourage commercial property owners and managers across the Nashville area to plan ahead and get on the schedule while conditions are favorable. Sealcoating can help protect pavement from water intrusion and the effects of winter weather. Fresh striping can help keep parking lots clear and easy to navigate as daylight hours get shorter. And addressing cracks before winter may help reduce the amount of water that gets beneath the pavement, potentially preventing more extensive repairs down the road.
