✨MAZON 150!✨ Come celebrate Mazon, IL Sesquicentennial Celebration downtown today until 4pm!! There’s food trucks, snacks and goodies, bounce houses, live music, an art market, and so much more!

While you’re here, make sure to stop by the SGN booth and write a love letter to your CommuniTree - an American Dream Oak that we will be planting at the Mazon Centennial Park tomorrow morning at 10:30am!

If you drive around Mazon this week you might see our historic tractor and hay rack with the American Dream Oak CommuniTree parked on the corner of Center and Front street! 🇺🇸🌳🚜

We have a very special entry for the SGN float in the Sesquicentennial Parade on Sunday afternoon. Our nephew Carter Thomas will be driving an antique tractor & hayrack he built. The tractor is a 1951 Ford 8N which was originally bought by Emanuel Johnson for use at his gas station in town and some farm use. It was then purchased by Jim Thomas (Carter’s Grandpa & Jamie’s Dad) around 1984, and mowed 10 acres every week for 15 years at their property south of town on Dwight road. From there, it sat in a barn until 2021 when Carter Thomas and his father Shannon Thomas (Jamie’s brother) pulled it out and got it to run. After getting it started and mowing with it again for 2 years, the decision was made that the engine was worn out and due for a rebuild. Carter then did a full engine rebuild, and the tractor has since run perfectly for an additional 50 hours to plow snow, mow grass, do tillage, and take hay rack rides. The hayrack was pulled out from the edge of the woods at Harford Farms (Becky’s family timber), and was subsequently restored. Based on a running gear bought from Montgomery Ward, it has been shortened and built into a matching size hay rack for the 8N tractor!

Carter completed the rebuilds for his FFA project while in high school. He now attends University of Illinois (I-L-L!) and is majoring in Agricultural Engineering. He works on our SGN crew here during summers and breaks, and he is a great addition to our team here at the nursery during the summer! Carter has led the way for lots of building projects around here, and he loves to help fix equipment and keep things running around here. THANK YOU to Carter for sharing your talents and passions.

Our hometown is celebrating 150 years this week, and we are excited to be part of that celebration! Throughout this week there are educational and social events all around town. Keep an eye out for the SGN Booth at the vendor fair on Saturday, August 8th where we will have an American Dream Oak CommuniTree. We invite you to come by and write a message of hope for the next 150 years to hang on our CommuniTree before we plant it at the park on Sunday after the church service!

We are so excited to be planting an American Dream Oak 🇺🇸🌳 on Sunday, August 9th at the Mazon Park to celebrate the town Sesquicentennial! Make sure to check out the calendar of events for the full list of all of the festivities! We can’t wait to watch this Oak grow for generations to come!

Save the date! Join us for an evening of fellowship and food at the tree farm with Whiskey Acres, BBQ Baker, and Spring Grove Nursery.

The event is hosted by Keep Grundy Growing, LLC, a program of the Community Foundation of Grundy County. Executive Director Julianne Buck had this to share about the event, “We are SO excited to announce that Jamie Walter, Founder of Whiskey Acres in DeKalb, is the keynote for our farm dinner on July 16th!

Jamie has a fabulous story of how they came to use their own corn to grow their distillery – as well as his own philanthropic story. This free event is open to Grundy farm families.

Please share with any farm families you know.” She also requests RSVPs a week before so they can plan accordingly for food.

Our own family farms of Spring Grove Nursery and Harford Farms are so excited to host this event. We hope you can join us later this summer!
