As May wraps up we want to highlight Lindens one more time - specifically the American Linden, aka Basswood. While on a hike in our woods last weekend, Fern & Becky noticed a little deer trail that revealed itself once the creek bank dried up a bit. They followed the trail which led them down tothe waters edge where they discovered this remarkable American Linden! Jamie showed Fern how to ID a Linden, and everyone marveled at its giant canopy and sweet scent filling the air from its flowers. Another favorite Linden on the farm is the new American Linden Jamie & Becky added to their garden last year. It is almost in full bloom now and the canopy is bustling with bees intoxicated by the Lindens sweet nectar. Check out this link for more about these special trees in our ecosystem and landscape! https://springgrovenursery.com/product-category/genus/tilia-linden/

Acer platanoides ‘Deborah’ is welcoming spring with pretty purple foliage that lights up the landscape before transitioning to deep green for summer. In fall, the leaves shift again to warm bronze tones, giving you season-long interest from one dependable tree.

At maturity, the Deborah Norway Maple reaches approximately 45’ tall and 40’ wide, making it an excellent choice for larger yards and neighborhood plantings.

May Tree of the Month: Linden

Tilia tomentosa ‘Green Mountain’ features shimmering green leaves with silvery undersides that flash and sparkle as the breeze moves through the canopy. It creates an almost glowing effect in the landscape during summer.

‘Green Mountain’ is more resistant to Japanese Beetles than many other Linden varieties, making it a dependable shade tree choice.

Fun fact: Linden trees have long been planted as “gathering trees” throughout Europe, where people would meet beneath their massive canopies for celebrations, markets, and community events.

We LOVE stumbling on things like this 🪺 in our sales yard. Can you even believe that birds build these tiny architectural masterpieces without opposable thumbs?

Nature is so incredible. And if you are wondering which tree this bird chose? It's a Malus sargentii ‘Select A’ otherwise known as The Firebird Crabapple.

These are the flowers that make the buckeyes!

Aesculus glabra ‘JN Select’ aka Early Glow® Ohio Buckeye is putting on its beautiful spring display with upright clusters of soft yellow blooms rising above the foliage.

Later in the season, those flowers develop into the glossy brown “buckeyes” the tree is famous for.

This native shade tree grows to a manageable size, is very adaptable, and has strong disease resistance. An excellent choice for home landscapes.

Fun fact: The Ohio Buckeye is Ohio’s state tree, and the nuts inspired the nickname “Buckeye State.” 🌰

It's a baby Bur Oak but it already has that gorgeous bark!

Bur Oak is one of those trees that instantly feels timeless. With massive limbs, deeply textured bark, and a broad, powerful canopy as it matures, Quercus macrocarpa is a true Midwest classic.

This native Oak isn’t flashy but it's the kind of tree that anchors landscapes for generations, provides incredible wildlife value, and somehow looks even better with age.

May Tree of the Month: Linden

Tilia cordata ‘Greenspire’ – Greenspire Littleleaf Linden stands out in the landscape with a strong central leader & formal pyramidal shape.

The reddish bark is set off by bright green leaves and yellow fall color. The fragrant June blooms make this an excellent pollinator.

Everything on Lindens is edible and used in many ancient medicinal remedies. From the bark, to the leaves, to the blooms, and even honey from nearby bees, Lindens should be in every neighborhood!

Tree of the Month: Linden

Tilia americana ‘Redmond’ is a beautiful Basswood selection with a dense pyramidal shape, oversized heart-shaped leaves, and clusters of pale yellow flowers that absolutely hum with pollinators in summer. If you’ve ever stood near a blooming Linden tree in June, you know the fragrance stops you in your tracks.

And here’s a favorite nursery saying about Lindens: “They sleep, they creep, they leap.”

Young trees may seem slow at first, but once established they take off and become incredible shade trees with a strong formal shape and glowing yellow fall color.

We think every neighborhood could use more Lindens.
