Join us this Friday evening for our latest Leaf by Leaf gathering, where we discuss Walden by Henry David Thoreau! Book club gatherings are always a lovely time filled with good conversation, light refreshments, and fellow readers who feel most at home in the natural world. Didn’t read the book? That’s ok! You are welcome too! These next few days we’ll be sharing some of our favorite quotes from Walden, and we’re curious to hear yours, as well!

June at the nursery means pruning, staking, field work… and SERVICEBERRIES. One of our favorite signs that summer has officially arrived is spotting those juicy little berries ripening in the trees.

We’ve spent many June mornings out in the field filling buckets with ripe Serviceberries for jam, baked goods, and even homemade ice cream. This year’s crop is a little lighter, but somehow that just makes every berry taste even sweeter.

If you’ve never tried one before, imagine a blueberry with a hint of almond and a sweet, nutty flavor. Perfect for muffins, crisps, pies or eating straight off the tree while you’re “working.”

Few things feel more like summer than stained fingers and a bucket full of berries.

We are kicking off the month of June with our crews split between pruning, staking, and weeding. The weather this season has been beautiful so far! In the next few weeks, the main focus of our crew will be pruning Oaks. We start by un-staking 2nd & 3rd year trees, letting them “flop” around a bit, pruning the tops to reduce canopy weight, re-staking as needed. Because of these extra steps, Oaks take the most time of any genus we grow.

Our Oak blocks always look AMAZING once this process is complete, and it’s one of our favorite spots in the nursery! Now is the time of year we can really see what’s shaping up in the field, what’s growing great, and what needs a little extra attention with pruning and staking. We couldn’t be happier with the crops we have coming on for the next few seasons.

Tree of The Month June: Serviceberry

The Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry brings beauty across all seasons, which makes it one of our favorite trees at the nursery!

With delicate white spring flowers followed by edible red fruits in June, to a fiery red-orange glow in the fall and smooth gray branches adding winter interest along with a strong structure that resists ice breakage the Serviceberry is a versatile and excellent Midwest Native tree. Serviceberry performs well in our field; we grow both single trunk and multi-stem versions.

It has a slow start as a young plant but it finishes strong. The single trunk form takes a little longer to caliper up than the multi-stem. We love how this tree has something interesting to offer in every season – especially in the summer when the berries are a nice treat in the field!
