🌿 Mites (Some) Like It Hot 🌿

By Arborist Bob Andreucci 🌳

With the weather warming up, it’s a good time to keep an eye out for spider mites in your gardens. Interestingly, these aren't actually insects—they are tiny arachnids (related to spiders) that feed by sucking the chlorophyll out of your plants.

🔍 What to look for:
If your leaves look mottled, pale, or are turning brown and falling off prematurely, mites might be the culprit. While they especially thrive in hot, dry conditions, some species are active in cooler weather, too.

📄 The “Paper Test”:
Because they are pretty much microscopic, the easiest way to detect them is to hold a sheet of white paper under a branch and give it a firm shake. If you see tiny specks moving across the paper, you’ve found some mites!
You can also check for fine webbing on the undersides of leaves.

🧴 Treatment Tips:
Before reaching for a spray, remember that some mites are actually the “good guys” that hunt other pests. Using a general insecticide will not affect mites and can often kill beneficial predators—sometimes making a mite infestation worse.
If you need to treat your plants, look for specific miticides and follow local guidelines. Or better yet, consult with a professional.

Aphids are a small group of small, soft bodied insects with needle like mouthparts. They use these to withdraw fluid for vascular tissues in stems, leaves and sometimes roots. They secrete saliva into the plant that contain substances to prevent the plant from sealing off their vascular tissue from the aphid. Aphid damage can be quite variable and include off color or yellow foliage, twisted and curled leaves, stunted shoots and canopy dieback. Aphids also produce a sticky substance called "honeydew." Aphids can also transmit plane diseases that can severely impact tree health. Frequent monitoring, proper soil management and fertilization can help prevent aphid outbreaks.
