My career has taken me through two very different industries, but the work has always begun in the same place: understanding people.

Before I make a design decision, I want to understand what home means to you. How do you live? What do you want to preserve? What has changed? And what does your home need to support next?

Those answers become the foundation for a home that isn’t defined by a passing trend or a designer’s signature. It is shaped by your identity, your experiences, and the life you’re living now.

That is Design From Within™.

This next chapter is about sharing more of that process—the questions I ask, the thinking behind the decisions, and how we translate those insights into the spaces we create at Brickell Interiors.

When someone shows me a Pinterest image, I'm not really looking at the room.

I'm looking at what made them stop on that one. Maybe it's the light. How open it feels. How quiet. How easy it looks to live in.

The image is a clue. It isn't the answer.

You don't need to arrive knowing exactly what you want. You bring the instinct. I ask the questions that help uncover what’s behind it.

Money can buy a beautiful home. It can’t buy a home that feels like you.

You can choose the best of everything and still walk into a room that belongs to no one in particular.

That happens when design begins with how a home should look. I begin somewhere else: with understanding the person who will live in it.

That order changes the direction of the entire project, so the home reflects who you are and supports the life you’re living now.

Every decision in your home has a purpose. Most of the time, nobody has said it out loud.

That’s why renovations can feel overwhelming. Paint, lighting, layouts, materials. Hundreds of choices, without a clear way to judge one against another. So we default to what looks good, what feels safe, or what everyone else is doing.

But the homes that feel most authentic aren’t the most expensive ones. They’re the ones where every decision points in the same direction.

That direction begins with understanding how you want to live - and using that understanding to guide every choice that follows.

Most clients don't come to me knowing exactly what they want their home to be.

They may know what isn't working. They may know how they want to feel. But translating that into a home is something we discover together.

That's why I don't begin with style. I begin with questions.

How do you want to live in this chapter of your life?
What does your home need to make possible?
Where do you feel most at ease?

The answers tell me far more than a collection of inspiration images ever could.

When a room isn't being used, most people look for what's wrong with it.

I look for what it could become. Because there's usually nothing wrong with it.

The room simply belonged to a routine that made sense at the time and quietly stopped. And that's perfectly okay! It just means the space is available now.

So instead of asking what needs updating, I ask about your life.

What's missing from your day?
Where do you go when you need quiet?

What have you never had room for? Those answers turn a forgotten room into the one you use most.

Nobody notices the day their home stops fitting.

There’s no single moment when it happens. The kids leave, and the house stays the same. Work moves home, and the house stays the same. Priorities shift, routines change—and eventually, you realize you’re living around rooms designed for a version of your life that has quietly moved on.

That’s not a design failure. It’s simply what happens when a home is designed for a moment rather than allowed to evolve with the people living in it.

The good news is that a home can evolve, too. And often, the most meaningful changes begin not with what you buy or replace, but with understanding what you need from your home now.

That’s why I created my Reflection Guide. It includes some of the questions I ask before we begin designing.

Your home can be beautiful and still make daily life harder. Most people don’t notice it right away.

It shows up months after everything is finished, when you realize you’ve rearranged your habits around the house instead of the house working around you.

That doesn’t mean the design was bad, or that you chose wrong. It usually means the decisions were made around how the space should look, before anyone asked how you live in it.

That’s what I want to understand first. Not what your home should look like, but what it needs to do for you.

A home can be beautiful and still feel like a showroom.

I see it often in Miami’s newer luxury condominiums. Floor-to-ceiling glass and developer finishes chosen with real care, and chosen before anyone knew who would live there.

I wrote something this week about what separates a decorated home from a personal one, and why the decisions that change how a home feels are usually the quiet ones. A reading chair placed where the morning light actually lands.

I believe luxury is walking into a room and feeling completely at ease in it.

"What's your style?"
It's usually the first question an interior designer asks.

I understand why. It feels like the natural place to begin.

But style only tells me what you find beautiful. It doesn't tell me how you want to live.

Two people can love the exact same room on Pinterest and still need completely different homes.

That's why I spend the first part of every project asking about your life—long before we talk about finishes, furniture, or color palettes.

How do your mornings begin?
Where do you naturally gather?
What do you wish your home made easier?

Because when a home is designed around your life instead of a style, it doesn't just look beautiful.

It feels unmistakably like you.
