Join us for From the Ground & Up! — advanced gardening education at its best, brought to you by the WSU Extension Pierce County Master Gardener Continuing Education Team.
Grow your knowledge, sharpen your skills, and connect with fellow gardeners through research-based learning designed for Pacific Northwest gardens.
✨ Everyone is invited to attend the keynote speakers — no registration selection required for those sessions! Following the keynote, attendees will choose from four outstanding breakout presentations during Session One.
🌿 Session One Choices:
🪲 Lawns & the European Chafer
Learn about the invasive beetle spreading across Washington. Its root-feeding grubs weaken turf while crows, raccoons, and other wildlife dig them up in search of a meal—acting as natural pest control. Discover how to identify chafer damage, time control methods effectively, and create a more resilient landscape that’s less vulnerable to pests.
🌺 The Begonia
Take an engaging and practical look at the dazzling world of tuberous begonias — the true showstoppers of the Begonia family. Learn how to grow and care for these spectacular blooms, including tips for successfully overwintering them in our cool Pacific Northwest climate. The presentation also includes a brief introduction to the broader Begonia genus and what makes these plants so captivating to collectors and gardeners alike.
🌱 Soil — “It’s About What’s Beneath Your Feet”
Healthy soil is the foundation of every successful garden. Learn the components of good soil, why soil is alive, and how it supports plant growth. This session includes a shake jar test demonstration, soil triangle exploration, soil amendment recommendations, composting basics, and the importance of soil testing.

Think citrus can’t grow here? Think again. Learn what citrus varieties actually work in our region, how to grow them successfully in containers or protected spaces, and how to expand what’s possible in your home garden.
