I deleted a post from last night because what I posted was bugging me. There’s nothing wrong with sales and discounts for Memorial day weekend. This is not speaking to any businesses offering promotions, so please no one take this as judgey…I just felt like my own head was not in the right place. So instead of using the holiday to promote my business interests, I want to walk back and revise to a simple, humble, and heartfelt thank you to all who served.

Long post (sorry), and probably only of interest to fellow business owners or people who are in sales roles in the construction industry: I recently had a negative experience with one of the Grant Cardone business coach guys. He cold called me to pitch his business coaching services. Fair enough, I took the time to hear him out. I had some tentative interest in what he was offering. I decided to sleep on it and make a decision the next day. When I told him it wasn’t the right fit for my business at this time, he just kept talking. It was like he was reading straight from a pitch deck trying to counter all my objections by twisting things I had said in our conversations and creating pain points that don’t exist for my company. He moved himself from the “I’ll consider this at a later time” category to the “I don’t want to do business with this guy” category because he was pushy, and borderline insulting. I finally said, “I’ve told you my decision. Is this conversation going to continue until I hang up on you?” Indeed, that’s exactly what happened. A lot of roofing companies are just sales organizations that happen to offer roofing services as their product. Their field reps are trained on how to get someone to sign a contract, not on how to build a quality roof. I want my business to be the opposite of that. Fellow business owners, what’s your balance point between the craft of what you do and the sales skills to bring in plenty of business? I know both are necessary. If the bank accounts are the score card, it looks like the more sales-oriented companies are winning. Is that just the way of the world, or is there a way to focus on the craft and still thrive in the market?

As the summer heat picks up, home and business owners are looking for service providers they can actually trust. Performance Heating and Cooling, Inc keeps local spaces comfortable, and we recently partnered with them to produce their television commercial campaign.

Michelle and the team at Performance understand that high-quality production is not just about showing the work. It is about building immediate credibility before a technician even arrives on site.

If your business is heading into its busiest season, your marketing should match the caliber of your service. Let us help you show your market exactly why you are the premium choice. Reach out to Blackoak Productions to discuss your next commercial project.

One thing that I find challenging in my business is the lists of small projects. If I visit with a homeowner who has a single project with a clearly stated objective, like “I need a new roof” or, “can you build a deck around my pool?” that’s easy to quote and complete. I’m confident that I can bring value at an affordable price. But, when I visit with a customer who has multiple unrelated small projects, I usually either 1) underbid the project and find myself upside down in the job, or 2) run the numbers and the price seems way too high and just doesn’t scan for the work that I’m quoting. Any fellow business owners have any advice for me? Or better yet, do I know anyone who is good at the “long list of small projects” type of work who I could refer my customers to?
