This Friday and Saturday I helped my dad’s company, Tom’s Tree Service, on an emergency job.

A big oak came down across two homes — tough situation for both homeowners. Friday we checked everything out, got Consumers and a crane lined up, and started taking weight off where we could.

Saturday we got into it and worked the tree off both houses piece by piece. The final pick with the crane was right around 12,000 lbs. Cleaned everything up and got the worst area tarped as best as possible.

Not a fun situation, but glad we could be there to help.

We wrapped up our last oak pruning job of the season a few days ago 🌳✂️

As a Certified Arborist and Oak Wilt Identification & Management Qualified professional, I take this timing seriously. With warmer weather here, we’re officially done pruning oaks until fall.

Why? Because this is when oak wilt becomes a major risk. Fresh pruning cuts can attract beetles that spread the disease, putting otherwise healthy oaks in danger.

Just to clarify—no, trees don’t literally explode in winter.
I’m a certified arborist and TRAQ-qualified, and what can happen in extreme cold is something called frost cracking. When temperatures drop fast, the wood inside a tree contracts unevenly and can cause a loud crack or split—sometimes it sounds like a gunshot.
It’s rare, but it does happen, and damaged trees can become unsafe over time. If you ever hear a loud crack or notice new splits, that’s when it’s worth having a professional take a look 👍🌳

EXPLODING TREES are possible in the Midwest and Northern Plains on Friday and Saturday, as temperatures are forecasted to fall 20 degrees BELOW zero!
