MOSQUITO SPRAYING NOTICE 🦟

Horry County Mosquito Control may begin truck-mounted mosquito spraying operations on Tuesday, May 5, 2026.

The spraying will be conducted Monday through Thursday from about 30 minutes prior to sunset until around 11:30 p.m. This schedule will continue as weather allows.

This doesn’t mean spraying will happen every night, just that crews will spray when conditions call for it and as weather conditions, such as rain, wind and temperature allow.

Horry County only uses products approved by the EPA and DPR. The product poses a minimal risk to humans or animals. Individuals with asthma or other respiratory illnesses may wish to stay indoors and close windows and doors during spraying. In addition, homegrown fruits and vegetables should be washed, scrubbed, and/or peeled before eating.

To help keep our local honeybee population safe, beekeepers are urged to contact Horry County Stormwater to identify the location of their colonies. Visit the link in the comments below to register your beehives.

Additionally, those wishing to request spraying in the unincorporated areas of Horry County (outside city limits) can contact the Horry County Road & Drainage Hotline at 843-381-8000 or via the online form found at the link in comments.

OK so this week's frost and freeze is behind us...but it's still a bit early for your classic summer bedding plants and vegetables. While we may not see another freeze, the ground is still a bit too chilly. There are LOTS of things you can get started with this weekend including trees and shrubs (I'm adding some azaleas to the yard this weekend) as well as some more hardy perennials. I'll be getting my porch ferns this weekend, too. We can always bring them in for a night or two if it gets cold again. Happy gardening.

NEW HOME? APPLY FOR LEGAL RESIDENCE

Did you buy a new home in the past year, or have a change to your deed? Apply for the 'Legal Residence' tax exemption! Approximately 3,400 letters are being mailed out this week to encourage community members to apply for the tax exemption.

'Legal Residence' is a statewide special tax assessment rate for those who own and live in a home full-time in SC. SC law provides the 4% assessment ratio on primary residential properties (the alternative is 6%). This only applies to primary residences, not second/vacation homes.

It's a good idea to apply as soon as you file your 2025 taxes, as those documents are a part of the application process to receive the exemption. If you had a change on your deed (married or divorced, added someone, put property into trust, transferred spouse to spouse, etc.), you'll need to update your property status with the Assessor's Office to continue to receive the exemption.
