ROOM TO HOST. I love to host, so my compact NYC kitchen had to work well for entertaining. The solution was an interior window with a countertop, carved into the wall between the kitchen and dining room. It keeps the kitchen open to the dining and living spaces when guests are over, and it lets daylight from the kitchen window carry through into the dining room. With a door out to the wraparound terrace, a room that could have felt closed off now works the way I actually live. CL

ONE OF ONE. Custom work is one of my favorite parts of the design process, and the best way to ensure the design is responding the architecture and location in a meaningful way. Here is a look at how we designed a custom chandelier for a residence in Aspen. CL

REFINED REFLECTION. The light in this room changes drastically throughout the day, and the GLASS coffee table responds to it, catching, reflecting, and shifting as the light moves across the space. Its transparency creates movement in the room without introducing color or pattern. That was the idea behind GLASS from the beginning: to create pieces that are never totally static, and instead, continually respond to their surroundings. CL

ROOM TO RETREAT. The primary bedroom is the only place where the renovation extended beyond the original shell. Here, a new window seat was carved into the wall, creating a quiet place to read, apart from the cottage’s open shared spaces. A steeply pitched ceiling gives the room height, and antiques, including a polished mahogany wardrobe and a vintage chest at the foot of the bed, tie it to the layered, countryside cottage character of the rest of the house. MORE THAN A PASSAGE. In renovating this Aspen residence, we gave the transitional spaces the same attention as the living areas and bedrooms. The staircase was entirely redone as a thread connecting each floor, beginning at the entry, where an amber glass railing filters daylight from the front door and windows. Artwork at the top invites a pause before descending. Downstairs, with less natural light, the glass takes on a deeper hue, and the materials shift with it to darker leathers and richer wood tones. Treating the stair as more than a way from one floor to the next gives each transition its own character while tying the house together. CL

FROM IDEA TO FORM. A glimpse into the ideation and design process behind my GLASS furniture collection, exclusively represented by STUDIOTWENTYSEVEN. Material, geometry, and presence were central to the development of these pieces. Here’s a look at some of the sketches and ideas that shaped the tables. CL

A CHANGE IN FUNCTION. In this West Village apartment, the former primary bathroom was reimagined as a porcelain-tiled w**e cellar to better suit how the clients use the home. Positioned just beyond the dining area, the cellar introduces an unexpected architectural moment, with its warm glow drawing the eye through the space. CL

MARBLE-CLAD. In a beach home defined by a vibrant palette, this bathroom takes a moodier approach, clad entirely in a smoked gray marble. The material carries across the walls and surfaces, giving the room a strong architectural presence, while vintage Murano glass sconces by Visual Comfort add another layer of texture and light. CL

COLOR AS ARCHITECTURE. Color can establish a point of view where architecture alone may not provide one, giving each room its own character and distinction. That was particularly important in this Connecticut cottage, where the existing architecture was relatively understated and the collection of antiques provided a strong foundation. I approached color as another architectural element, using distinct hues to give each room its own identity and create the feeling of an English country house, where no two rooms need to speak in quite the same way.

THE ART OF COLLECTING. Buy art that resonates with you, even if you don’t have a specific place in mind for it yet. The most interesting collections are often built this way—organically, over time—through pieces that have personal meaning rather than a predetermined role within a room. In this home, works by Carole Bove, Nick Cave, and Simone Leigh each bring their own perspective to the collection, creating a dialogue between different artists and mediums.

The design process then becomes about understanding where each piece belongs and how it interacts with the architecture, furnishings, materials, and natural light around it. Art should bring character and individuality to a space, while the elements around it give the collection room to be seen and appreciated. CL
