Mariah’s August article in STROLL Brookhaven is out—and this one hits especially close to home. 🌳💚

This month Mariah Menzie, Board Certified Master Arborist, writes about something our community experienced firsthand—the devastating July 4 storm and what it means for Brookhaven’s trees moving forward.

In “When Disaster Strikes: What the July 4 Storm Revealed About Trees,” Mariah talks about storm damage, tree risk, recovery, and something we believe strongly at Tree Wizard: a damaged tree doesn’t automatically mean a lost tree.

Some will need to come down. Others, with proper assessment and care, may have many years ahead of them.

This isn’t artwork—it’s what we found underneath the bark of an elm. 🌳

These intricate patterns are elm bark beetle galleries, uncovered during the removal of an elm just before the recent storms.
Elm bark beetles play an important role in the spread of Dutch elm disease (DED). The beetles don’t actually cause the disease. The disease is caused by a fungus. As the beetles move between infected and healthy elm trees, they can carry fungal spores with them and introduce the fungus while feeding.

Once infected, the fungus interferes with the tree’s ability to move water through its vascular system, which can lead to wilting, branch dieback and eventually the loss of the tree.

It’s a fascinating look at something most people never get to see—the story underneath the bark.

We want to sincerely apologize to anyone who has had trouble reaching us over the past several days.

The recent storms have created one of the largest surges in emergency tree work we've seen in years. We've received an overwhelming number of calls, messages, emails, and requests across all of our communication channels, and we know some of you have had difficulty reaching us. We're truly sorry for the frustration.

Please know that we're still here, and our entire team is working hard to help our community recover.

If you're waiting to hear back from us, or if you've already accepted your Tree Wizard quote and are waiting to be scheduled, we sincerely apologize for the delay. Please know that we haven't lost track of your request or your job.
Every customer and every job is important to us. We're responding to requests as quickly as possible. We're scheduling work based on urgency while also honoring customers who were already waiting before the storms. Our office will reach out as soon as we're able.

We couldn't be more proud of our entire Tree Wizard team—from our office staff to our crews—for the professionalism, compassion, and dedication they've shown throughout this storm recovery.

🌳 Free Wood Chip Drops Available! 🌳

Our crews are currently responding to storm damage throughout the area. Normally, we haul our wood chips to the city compost site, but they're temporarily unable to accept chip loads.

Rather than letting those chips go to waste, we're offering FREE wood chip drops to homeowners in the Norman and Noble areas.

Wood chips are excellent for:
• Mulching around trees and shrubs
• Garden pathways
• Erosion control
• W**d suppression

Please note:🌳 Chip drops are approximately 14 cubic yards. If you're wondering how much that is, check the comments below for an example of the size! 🌳🧙‍♂️

✔️ We prefer to dump chips on the driveway, but we can also deliver to large open areas that are easily accessible to our trucks.
✔️ Deliveries are based on where our crews are working, so we cannot guarantee an exact day or time.
✔️ Loads are full truckloads, not partial loads.
✔️ Chip size and appearance will vary depending on the trees we're working on.

Storms don't make appointments.

They leave broken branches, uprooted trees, damaged homes, muddy yards, and worried homeowners in their wake.

This week has been one of those weeks.

Storm response is a team effort. The people behind Tree Wizard have spent years honing their craft, and it shows in moments like these. From the canopy to behind the scenes, everyone is working together to secure homes, protect landscapes, and help families take their first steps toward normal again.

To everyone who has reached out following the storms, thank you for your patience and understanding. Our team is working diligently to care for existing clients, respond to emergencies, and assist as many families as we safely can. While we may not be able to reach everyone immediately, please know that every request is important to us, and we are working steadily through them as quickly and safely as possible.

🌳 Can you spot what's missing?

This tree had no visible root flare when we arrived. Over time, soil can accumulate around the base of a tree, or a tree may simply have been planted too deeply, leaving the root flare hidden below grade.

Using an air spade, we performed a Root Collar Excavation (RCE) to safely remove excess soil and expose the trunk flare without damaging roots. This process also allows us to inspect for girdling roots, decay, and other hidden issues that may contribute to stress or decline.

Sometimes improving a tree's health starts by uncovering what should have been visible all along.
