One of the highlights of the Farwest Show: National Nursery & Greenhouse Trade Show this year was getting to reconnect with our friend Phyllis Gricus, garden designer, speaker, writer, and principal of Landscape Design Studio.

While we were together in Portland, Phyllis told us about her latest article, “Planting Under Trees,” where she shares how she uses Smart Pots to grow small trees and shrubs beneath a mature red oak without disturbing its established root system.

As Phyllis explains, the breathable fabric naturally air-prunes roots, helping create a healthier, more compact root system. And 15 years later, her original fabric-potted plants are still going strong.

Growing lettuce through summer starts with choosing the right variety.

Heat tolerant choices like Super Jericho, Cimmaron, and Park Seed’s Summer Glory Blend are selected to hold longer before bolting. Give them afternoon shade, consistent moisture, and you may be surprised how long you can keep fresh lettuce growing.

What are you planting this fall?

Choosing the right variety matters throughout the garden. A plant that performs well in one climate may struggle in another, so pay attention to heat tolerance, disease resistance, and days to maturity when selecting seeds.
