Happy Halloween 🎃👻 🎃

We asked the office what profession they would’ve been if not in architecture! Some answers seemed right on point, while some came as a surprise👀 What would YOU have been if not in your profession?🧐

It was our absolute pleasure to see Tangelo Park residents enjoying their new community center at this week’s Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. Our design team has enjoyed the challenge of adapting an abandoned YMCA gym into a gleaming gymnasium, rebuilding the outdoor pool, and crafting a brand new community center with spaces for inspired gathering, fitness and enrichment.

The Tangelo Park Community Center will serve all ages. Preschool and school-aged children can partake in afterschool programs and activities, while teenagers can receive mentoring and support with high school coursework and college admissions. Adults will benefit from job placement services, as well as life skills and financial skills classes. Seniors now have a space for social clubs and fitness classes. All ages can enjoy the pool, computer lab, fitness activities and the multipurpose room. Outdoor pavilions shaded by solar panels offer space for farmers markets and festivals. Places to gather and live life together were thoughtfully designed for the residents of the Tangelo Park neighborhood.

The shape of the center itself was inspired by the homes in the surrounding neighborhood built in the 1960s. Pops of orange, green and blue pay homage to the history of the site as a citrus grove settled under the blue Florida sky, which is also the inspiration for the community’s name. KMF was honored to be a part of this special project.

As always, thank you to our team for making this project a success:

It was an honor to attend the University of North Florida Blue & Gray Bash on Friday evening! Our design team has had the best time reimagining the UNF Arena and Field House spaces over the past year, and it was wonderful to see the community out for a fun evening supporting UNF athletics!

New Team Member Alert! We are thrilled to welcome Sean Johnson, AIA to the KMF team!

Sean has spent much of his professional career practicing in Northeast Florida, particularly in Jacksonville and St. Augustine, where he has owned and operated his practice for the past ten years. Living and working in St. Augustine has reinforced his belief that one of the most important aspects of sustainability is preserving and thoughtfully adapting the historic building stock we already have.

He received both his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Florida, where he developed a deep appreciation for Florida Modernism, particularly the work of Paul Rudolph and the Sarasota School of Architecture. His practice is grounded in a humanist design approach—one informed by place and the vernacular, and guided by a balance of innovation, restraint, and constructability. Collaboration among the client, design team, construction team and local stakeholders is central to this process.

Sean’s career has now come full circle. His first summer internship was in Orlando, and he looks forward to working with new clients throughout Central Florida while continuing to serve the Northeast Florida clients with whom he has built relationships spanning more than 25 years.

Outside of architecture, Sean’s interests include photography, furniture design, and music.
