The rarest roses are not defined by a single trait.

Just outside Lyon, the Orard family has been breeding roses since 1930. Nearly a century later, that work continues through Pierre and Jean-Charles Orard, together with Laurence Orard.

It is a small breeding house by global standards, driven by an extraordinary passion for the rose. Over generations, Roses Orard has introduced numerous varieties to American gardens, pursuing the difficult combination of beauty, fragrance and performance.

Their latest introduction with us is Maison Rouge™.

An exceptional red Hybrid Tea is remarkably difficult to achieve. Maison Rouge™ brings together rich, saturated red color, good disease resistance and an unmistakably French fragrance.

Its distinctive, sculpted center opens slowly to reveal more than 50 petals, becoming gently ruffled as the flower matures while retaining an elegant form.

We look for roses where no single characteristic carries the whole. Form. Fragrance. Color. Performance. When they come together, something exceptional emerges.

Every rose deserves a fair trial.

These three selections were bred with passion by American hybridizer Frank Gatto. Now, they begin the next chapter of their journey through our evaluation program.

Their first test will take place in our Arizona rose fields, where they will be evaluated under demanding growing conditions. Selections that demonstrate promise will advance to container trials at our San Luis Obispo facility, alongside garden trials in Texas and Vermont.

This process takes years…and it should.

Trialing roses has always been a foundation of our work. A beautiful flower is only the beginning. We evaluate the complete plant: vigor, disease tolerance, repeat bloom, habit, climate adaptability and, ultimately, its ability to perform in a gardener’s hands.

Our trials include genetics from some of the world’s largest breeding houses as well as independent hybridizers like Frank. The name behind the rose does not change the standard. Every selection earns its place on the same field, under the same evaluation criteria.

That level playing field matters. Because in the end, this isn’t about who bred the rose.

It’s about the rose and the gardener who will one day grow it.

Some roses wait years to be discovered.

This unnamed variety was bred in 2014 by American rose hybridizer Frank Gatto and has never been commercially released.

After a career as an engineer with the United States Navy, Frank found a second calling in roses, establishing a small nursery in Gig Harbor, Washington, and dedicating himself to the art of hybridization.

We first came to know Frank through our shared passion for roses, a passion that quickly became friendship. Today, we have the privilege of preserving, growing and evaluating selections from his breeding work, including this remarkable rose.

Frank is also the hybridizer behind Ember Room, which we were honored to introduce through April & Ashley

We exist in part for roses like this: to preserve important genetics, document the work of breeders, and ensure that exceptional roses, and the stories of the people who created them, are not lost.

The next generation is never created by following the last.

Since 1962, four generations of the Ilsink family have devoted themselves to imagining what a rose might become. What began in a 50-square-meter greenhouse in the Netherlands grew into one of the world’s most influential breeding programs, pioneering the modern spray rose and continually reshaping the possibilities of color, form and performance.

That spirit can be seen in Explorer®. Its deep red color, commanding form and vase life of approximately 15 to 18 days have made it an increasingly important variety among growers and floral professionals in Ecuador and Colombia. It is a rose created not only to make an impression, but to sustain one.
