Some highly anticipated albums released this week, what’s your favorite?



STOPPED LOVING YOU
by Slater Nally
I’ve been a fan of Slater Nally since American Idol, and this feels like the song that really shows what he can become. There’s something about his voice and the way he approaches this song that feels like Chris Stapleton in his early days, raw, soulful, and completely rooted in the song. I need a Slater Nally and Chris Stapleton duet immediately. I really hope country radio grabs onto this one because it deserves to be heard. My Song of the Week.

FLOWERS

I was lucky enough to get an early listen to this album, and holy crap, this is good. The songwriting is the star here, and this is one of those albums you want to listen to completely by yourself just so you can actually sit with every lyric. The production feels intentionally more restrained, giving the songs room to breathe and allowing David’s voice and storytelling to carry the record. An incredibly thoughtful, beautifully written album from an artist who continues to prove just how good he is.

LONG WAY HOME
by Stella Lefley
Stella Lefley has had a massive year, and somehow it feels like she’s only getting started. Long Way Home is a really strong debut that shows exactly why so much attention has been building around her. A lot of the standout tracks had already been released as singles, which can sometimes take away from the impact of a full album, but there’s still plenty here that works as a complete body of work. If this is the starting point, I’m really excited to see where Stella goes next.

YOUNG
by Dan + Shay
Honorable Mention Album
Dan + Shay continue to prove why they’re one of the best duos in country music, and Shay has one of the best male voices in the genre. “Old Guys” with Cody Johnson is my favorite track and one I really hope country radio picks up because it is so country. Also, “Dogs In Our Twenties” is another standout that shows off and will get you in the feels.

Your GPS doesn’t just give up… it just recalculates the route.

Honestly, I think we all need to hear this sometimes.

Things don’t always go the way we thought they would. Plans change. People change. Life throws some random s**t at you, and suddenly you’re headed in a completely different direction than you expected.

That doesn’t mean you’re lost.

It doesn’t mean you failed.

Sometimes you’re just figuring out what comes next.

So if life feels a little off course right now, give yourself a break. You don’t have to have it all figured out. Just keep moving forward.

Maybe the new route ends up being better than the one you originally planned.

Seems like summer music is still coming.

SONG OF THE WEEK — “Made You Look” by Hudson Westbrook
An upbeat, feel-good country song that I could easily see making a big impact. Hudson has been teasing this one as a fun summer song, and it feels like another step toward establishing himself in country music.

HONORABLE MENTION — “Take Me Home” by Chase Beckham
This one honestly caught me off guard, but I really like it. It has that emotional, radio-friendly sound that could make this his next No. 1 on country radio.

COUNTRY ADJACENT — Where You Wanna Go by Lathan Warlick
A country-gospel album with some hip-hop mixed in, and it works really well. Lathan is carving out his own lane, and I think this project could make some real noise with the country crowd.

ALBUM OF THE WEEK — “Coral Reefer” by Brian Kelley
If you don’t remember, Brian Kelley is one half of Florida Georgia Line, and his solo music has leaned heavily into summer vibes. This whole album feels like a beach town vacation with upbeat songs, a little Jimmy Buffett influence, and a great feature from ERNEST. Just a really fun summer album.

“Closing Time” — Little Big Town & Kelsea Ballerini
A little slower than I expected, but really well written. I’m not sure it’s a country radio hit, but it’s definitely a great album cut.

“Mess” — Jordan Davis
Not my favorite Jordan Davis release, but still a solid song. It’s another look at his more vulnerable side and definitely worth a listen.

HONORABLE MENTION — “Live From The Hill Country” by Parker McCollum
Only three songs, but honestly, really good. I’ve loved Parker’s older stuff, but I’m really enjoying this new direction he’s taking his music.

“Way To Go” — Zach John King, John King & Brooks & Dunn
This is such a fun release. I love the pairing of Zach and Brooks & Dunn, and after being on the road together this summer, it feels like a pretty perfect collaboration.

“Keep Breathing” — Lil Man J
Definitely my country-adjacent pick. The chorus has this early-to-mid 2000s rap feel that I wasn’t expecting, but it works really well. Definitely go give this one a listen.

What are your thoughts on the new Instagram wordmark?

I have seen so many people freaking out about it, but honestly, I kind of like it. I think it was time for a little change, and overall, I think it looks good.

The R does look a little strange to me. It kind of looks like a Z, but other than that, I think it was a good update.

Anytime something changes, people are really quick to hate it because they are not ready for change. And honestly, I think sometimes that reaction says more about us than it does about the actual design. We get so used to seeing something a certain way that even a small change can feel wrong.

And just to clarify, a lot of people are calling this the new Instagram logo, but technically it is the Instagram wordmark. A wordmark is the part of a brand identity that uses the actual name of the company as the design. So in this case, Instagram is updating the way the name itself is designed. The Instagram icon is a separate part of the brand identity.

What are your thoughts? Good change or did they mess with something that did not need fixing?

As a designer, this isn’t shade toward the Buffalo Bills at all, it’s genuinely a design question.

How does a brand-new $2.2B stadium end up with seats featuring obstructed views? From an architecture, stadium design, and sightline perspective, there are so many questions about how this made it through the design process.

Beautiful architecture is one thing. Good design has to function, too.
