Happy Juneteenth

Today we recognize and celebrate Juneteenth, a holiday commemorating June 19, 1865 — the day enslaved people in Galveston, Texas learned they were free, more than two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.

Juneteenth is an important day in American history because it celebrates freedom while also reminding us that progress and justice have not always reached everyone equally or at the same time.

Today is a time to honor resilience, reflect on our shared history, celebrate culture and community, and continue learning from the past.

Michigan Mineral Monday

This week we're highlighting Azurite — a stunning deep-blue mineral known for its rich color and beautiful crystal formations!

Azurite can be found right here in Michigan in Dickinson, Keweenaw, Marquette, and Ontonagon counties, making it one of the many treasures connected to the Upper Peninsula’s incredible mining history.

Often called "the stone of heaven" because of its vivid blue color, azurite forms in copper-rich environments and is frequently found alongside other minerals like malachite. In fact, some specimens display gorgeous blue-and-green combinations that make them favorites among collectors.

Its intense color was so striking that ancient civilizations even ground azurite into powder and used it as a pigment in paints!

Michigan’s copper country continues to reveal amazing minerals and a fascinating geologic history beneath our feet. Have you ever seen azurite in person?

Fossil Friday!

This week we're spotlighting Crinoids — ancient marine animals that are often called "sea lilies" because of their flower-like appearance. But despite the nickname, crinoids aren’t plants at all — they’re actually related to sea stars and sea urchins!

Millions of years ago, crinoids covered ancient ocean floors, anchored to the seabed by long stems while their feathery arms filtered food from the water. Today, their fossilized stem segments are some of the most commonly found fossils and often look like little stacked discs or tiny stone beads.

Here's a fun fact: if you’ve ever picked up a rock and noticed small circular patterns that looked like little cheerios or buttons, you may have already found crinoid fossils without even realizing it!

And here’s the really wild part — crinoids are still around today! Modern crinoids still live in oceans around the world, including feather stars and sea lilies found in deep waters. So while their fossil relatives lived hundreds of millions of years ago, their family tree is still alive and thriving beneath the waves.

Ancient fossils and living prehistoric survivors? That’s a pretty amazing Fossil Friday if you ask us!
