St. Lawrence Nurseries

St. Lawrence Nurseries An organic nursery specializing in cold-hardy fruit and nut trees. Located in Potsdam, NY. My name is Connor Hardiman. St.

Lawrence Nurseries has been around for over 40 years, providing trees to our customers. Up until last year, the nursery was run by Bill and Diana MacKentley. They have since commenced a much deserved retirement, but I have taken over the business! Our customers are people in cold places who want to grow a few fruit trees, have a berry patch, or experiment with edible landscaping. Our aim is to pro

vide plants which will bear fruit in a very cold climate, not just look pretty in someone's yard, although many of them serve both purposes. To this end, we strive to ship healthy, tough young plants that are well-packaged and ready to grow. We are not a landscape retailer, and we do not sell trees by their caliper measurement. We are a real nursery growing hardy young plants that can be easily and successfully dug, shipped and replanted in your yard. All our trees are grown organically and sustainably, to deliver the best product we can.

Finally got started on spraying fish emulsion this morning! Strava is a very smell-motivated dog, but I am happy to report that she had no interest in the stinky stuff; I was a little afraid she would try to roll around in the rows after I was done spraying!

Reminder:

Due to high winds and the likely probability of rain this evening, the Gardenshare dinner will now take place at the Community Center in Crary Mills!

Next year, our beautiful indoor space (heartwoodhallpotsdam) will be open and we will be able to keep events on-site, even in bad weather!

Make sure to come out to the farm next Saturday, 6/27, to hang out with Mose Crossing and The Blue Line Food Truck for our first musical event of the season!

Here’s what’s been up around the nursery…

Zac and Adam have finished planting ALL of the grafted fruit apples, pears, and plums. With 25,000 grafts to go in the ground, it is no easy feat. There are some replants, a few more Sweet Saps, and Brandywine raspberries left to plant, and then we will be able to move into full-time weeding and mulching.

The orchard is loaded with the first signs of fruit! The orchard is about 5 years old, and this year will likely be the first significant harvest of apples.

Connor and Allyssa started an exciting project- collecting leaves for genetic testing on 50 of our permanent orchard trees. Genetic testing has become much more affordable and accessible in recent years, so we are planning to test 50 or so trees each year, starting now! Many of our “SLN introductions” were scions given to Bill or even Fred throughout the years, so it will be interesting to know the full genetic background of some varieties that we have not had a lot of information on until now. The samples were sent to Washington State University, and it will be another 3 or 4 months before we receive our results.

Did you miss our spring deadline but are still looking for a tree? We potted up a small (but very diverse!) selection, which are available for purchase at the farmstand on Rt. 310 in Canton. There are a few apples and a few dwarf cherries remaining.

Today we are working on major cleanup and general sprucing up for our first event of the season- the Gardenshare Fundraiser dinner next Friday, June 19th. Catered by , drinks by , and 30 years of memories with . There are still tickets available, but be sure to sign up in the next few days, as spots are limited! You can reserve your plate on the Gardenshare website.

More exciting news for this upcoming season! We are thrilled to host local yoga teacher, Sarah Mae, for both evening and select Saturday morning classes in the orchard!

Most of our monthly live music events (all except July) will start off with yoga, tucked away in the orchard where you can still hear hints of the music happening up front! Sarah will also be offering yoga on alternating Saturdays from July through September! Check out the flyer for all the details, but I’ll also be sure to post reminders and updates as we get closer to all the dates.

Our first class will be Saturday, June 27th from 5-6pm, during the first live music event of the season (featuring Mose Crossing as our performers). There is a suggested donation of $10-15 for yoga participants. We will provide a few extra mats, but please bring a mat or towel if you can! Classes will be outside unless otherwise specified!

At last, the long-awaited schedule of events for the next few months at the nursery! More details to come on each individual event, but we wanted to make sure we got the whole schedule out so folks can start planning for our “Party in the Orchard” evenings.

More events may very well be added to the schedule as time goes on, so keep an eye out for updates as the season continues!

Looking forward to seeing you at the farm!
