St. Lawrence Nurseries

St. Lawrence Nurseries An organic nursery specializing in cold-hardy fruit and nut trees. Located in Potsdam, NY. My name is Connor Hardiman. St.

Lawrence Nurseries has been around for over 40 years, providing trees to our customers. Up until last year, the nursery was run by Bill and Diana MacKentley. They have since commenced a much deserved retirement, but I have taken over the business! Our customers are people in cold places who want to grow a few fruit trees, have a berry patch, or experiment with edible landscaping. Our aim is to pro

vide plants which will bear fruit in a very cold climate, not just look pretty in someone's yard, although many of them serve both purposes. To this end, we strive to ship healthy, tough young plants that are well-packaged and ready to grow. We are not a landscape retailer, and we do not sell trees by their caliper measurement. We are a real nursery growing hardy young plants that can be easily and successfully dug, shipped and replanted in your yard. All our trees are grown organically and sustainably, to deliver the best product we can.

Maine Apple Camp 2026

Highlights included visits to the Maine Heritage Orchard and Whaleback Farm, panels and talks, paddle boarding with loons, a quick visit to the ocean, and being around other like-minded fruit-growing folks! Thanks to PPT CDR (Lee K VdW) for being our traveling buddy!

A joyful afternoon picking apples with the MacKentley-Thornton clan, and getting Bill’s c***r press up and running again. It’s been many years since the SLN crew has made c***r, and it was a lot of fun to do it with a big gang of people. A c***r press on our side of town will definitely need to be a priority in the near future!

Picking aronias this morning! Aronias (also known as chokeberries) are one of the healthiest fruits; they have extremely high levels of antioxidants. They’re one of those berries that will suck all the moisture out of your mouth when you try to eat them fresh off the bush, so it’s definitely a good idea to turn them into something else to get those health benefits. I’m thinking I’ll mix these into a jam or maybe turn them into a syrup. They are beautiful, too! Some of the first leaves in the nursery beds whispering about fall… 🍁

We just got our annual share of honey from our lovely beekeepers! Marnie and Arden from BM Dooney Farms, LLC keep some of their beehives here at the nursery, and we get the benefit of pollination for our plants! The bees are fascinating to watch and learn about.

Yesterday was hazelbert-picking day! Last year, we got half a bag of nuts off of our hedges here at the new farm, and this year we got nine bags (plus some change!). Here’s some photos of the process, plus the bird nest, tree frog, and cocoon we found in the branches!

Here’s what’s happening around the farm…

More apples ripening! Here’s Connor holding a few Adanac apples we picked last night.

Hot, muggy weather! Strava finds some shade in the tunnel between rows of Sweet Saps.

More fruit! We’ve been eating raspberries by the handful, aronias (pictured) are almost ready, and elderberries will follow.

Weeding, weeding, weeding! Here’s, Zac and Jimmy work on cleaning out the rows to make it easier to count plants for inventory.

Flowers! We’ve been enjoying the never-ending and ever-changing sea of cover crop blooms out in the field. So pretty! Someone always remind us to add wildflower seeds to the cover crop mix!
