Today we honor the tradespeople.

The framers, the roofers, the tile setters, the electricians, the plumbers, the finish carpenters, and every single person who works with their hands to build the world around us.

This country runs on hands, hammers, and heart. Always has. And on Labor Day we stop to say thank you.

See those green panels stacked on the ground? That is what will hold the whole building square.

New garage build in Simpsonville. Two stories of frame are up, the roof trusses are set, and the ZIP sheathing is staged and ready to go on the walls. Once it does, the temporary bracing comes off and the building carries its own shear strength.

Framing gives the building its shape. Sheathing is what makes that shape permanent.

You will never see the frame once the decking is on. That is why we take our time on it.

Prospect deck rebuild continues. Posts are set, main beams span across, joists are in, and the decking has started going down. From the yard it looks like a deck taking shape. From underneath it looks like a plan.

A deck is only as strong as the frame under it. Every board that goes down after this depends on what happens now.

The yellow ratchet strap is holding this wall vertical.

New garage build in Simpsonville. Walls are framed, headers are set, and the strap is keeping a wall plumb while the temporary cross members go in. Once the sheathing is on the outside, the building carries its own shear strength. Right now the strap is doing that job.

Most of what keeps a building strong happens before anyone can see it.

Some decks earn a repair. This one earned a full rebuild.

A wraparound deck two stories off the back of a Prospect home. Painted railings, pergola over the seating area, turned columns down to the brick patio. We took it all the way down. The line on the brick shows where the old ledger sat. Rebuild starts next.

There is a point where patching costs more than starting over. This deck had reached it.

Everything about this bathroom is quiet. Except for the built-in shelf.

Part of the whole home remodel we finished in Louisville. White subway tile floor to ceiling. Blue penny round inside the built-in shelf. Curved brushed nickel fixtures. Everything calm. One deliberate spot that is not.

This mudroom and laundry space is part of a whole home remodel we finished in Louisville. A bedroom should feel like the place you actually want to come home to.

This guest bedroom is part of a whole home remodel we finished in Louisville. Plantation shutters that fit right. Wood floors that run through without interruption.
