A long read but an absolute must read if you are considering purchasing a swimming pool!
Insider Advice From a very experienced Pool Builder
If I were hiring someone to build my dream swimming pool, these are the questions I would ask before I ever let them on my property.
I’ve been in this industry a long time, and I’m hearing more and more disaster stories from homeowners who trusted the wrong person. There are some very good pool builders out there. We are not the only good one. But there are also a lot of people selling pools who honestly have no business building them.
So before you sign anything, ask these questions:
1. How much of the work do you subcontract out?
Are they an actual pool builder, or are they just a salesperson with a pickup truck who hires other people to do the work?!?
Do they own equipment?
Do they have employees?
Do they have crews?
Do they actually build pools themselves?
If they have no equipment, no employees, and no real crews, they are not truly building your pool. They are selling you a pool and hoping someone else can get it done. You would be shocked at how many ” Pool Builders” operate like this
2. Do they have a physical location?
This is huge.
Can you go to their location?
Can you see pools in person?
Can you touch and feel the product?
Can you see that they are a real, established business?
If someone does not have a physical location, that would be one of the biggest red flags for me personally.
A swimming pool is a major investment. You should not be trusting that investment to someone operating out of a truck with nowhere for you to go if something goes wrong.
3. How long have they been in business?
This matters more than people realize.
If a pool company has been in business less than five years, I would be very careful. The pool business is not easy. Most new builders do not survive. And if they disappear, where does that leave you?
You want a builder who has been through the ups and downs, who knows the soil, the drainage, the equipment, the problems, the service, and how to handle the job from start to finish.
Experience matters…..massively
4. What do they specialize in?
Be careful with someone who sells everything: fiberglass pools, gunite pools, liner pools, fencing, patios, outdoor kitchens, and anything else they can make a dollar on.
If you want a fiberglass pool, hire a real fiberglass pool builder.
Find someone who has one clear focus and does it every single day. The best results usually come from people who specialize, not people who chase every possible job.
5. Are they truly local?
This cannot be emphasized enough.
Are you really going to hire someone based out of Texas to build your pool in Louisiana?
Are you going to hire someone driving two or three hours to your house? What happens when you need service? What happens when there is a warranty issue? What happens when something needs attention after the job is finished?
A good local builder has a reputation to protect. They live here. They work here. Their name is on the line every day.
That matters.
At the end of the day, here is my advice:
Hire a real local pool builder.
Hire someone with a physical location.
Hire someone who owns equipment and has real crews.
Hire someone who has been doing this for years.
Hire someone who specializes in the type of pool you want.
Do not just take their word for it. Go see their location. Look at their work. Ask the hard questions.
A swimming pool should be one of the best investments you ever make for your family. But choosing the wrong builder can turn it into a nightmare.
Ask the right questions now, and you can save yourself a lot of stress later.
