How to style a room in the right order: anchors, character, finishing.
Anchors first. The large dough bowl, the cowhide rug, the lamp with real presence, the piece of furniture. Anchors set the shape of the room, and everything else gets built around them.
Character second. The vintage crock, the brick mold, the aged lantern, the stack of old books, the piece with a story attached to it. Character is the layer that makes a home look gathered over years instead of ordered in one afternoon.
Finishing last. A few shaped greenery stems, candles, warm light, decorative beads.
Most rooms that still feel unfinished have the order mixed up rather than the pieces wrong. The small things went out first because they are the easiest to place, and then the big piece had to squeeze into whatever space was left.
Set the anchors, then layer on top of them, and it works every time.
