Why Outdoor Tile Falls Apart (Part 2)

Take a closer look at these steps.

— Adhesive was applied in patches
— Large areas have no contact at all
— Voids are everywhere

Someone even tried to fix it by adding new adhesive on top of old —
this never works.

Here’s what happens next:
— water gets under the tile
— adhesive weakens
— tile loses bond and falls off

How it should be done

— completely remove old adhesive
— use outdoor-rated materials
— achieve 95%+ full coverage (no voids)
— apply adhesive to both:
• base
• tile

— create proper slope for drainage

Outdoor tile is not just installation —
it’s a water management system.

Ignore that, and failure is guaranteed.

Outdoor Tile Failure — It’s Only a Matter of Time (Part 1)

We inspected these exterior steps after tiles started coming loose.

Here’s what we found:

— The base was not prepared at all
— Tiles are holding only in some spots
— Hollow sound = voids under the tile
— No full adhesion, no proper system

Even where the tile hasn’t fallen yet,
it’s already hollow inside — it’s just a matter of time.

Water gets underneath, breaks the bond,
and the system starts to fail.

Why this happens

— no proper surface prep
— no full coverage adhesive
— wrong materials

What should have been done

— proper base preparation
— outdoor-rated adhesive
— epoxy grout
— priming and correct installation system

If the base is done wrong,
repairs are inevitable.

Shower Failure in 2 Months (Part 3)

Installed in a highly visible location —
and that’s just one of many issues.

— There is no proper waterproofing system on the walls.
Tile was installed over drywall, which will absorb moisture over time.

— Perimeter joints are not sealed correctly:
no silicone where it’s required, which leads to continuous cracking and water intrusion.

— Grout is already failing, and moisture is beginning to affect the system.

— The threshold (curb) is built incorrectly, and to fix this properly,
the shower must be rebuilt at least 6 inches up from the base to restore full waterproofing.

This means:
— removing the bottom row of tile
— rebuilding the shower pan and curb
— reinstalling tile with proper slope and system

Corners must be done with:
— epoxy grout for mitered edges
— silicone in all movement joints

Final Conclusion

This is not a minor repair.

This is a system failure after just 2 months.

The only correct solution is a partial tear-out and rebuild —
done the right way, with proper waterproofing and materials.

Anything else will fail again.

Shower Failure in 2 Months (Part 2)

Now let’s look closer at the finish and detailing.

— Silicone is missing in most corners.
Where it was applied, it’s the wrong color and done poorly.

All movement joints should be sealed with silicone —
instead, grout was used, and it’s already cracking everywhere.

— Grout is inconsistent:
• uneven
• poorly cleaned
• still visible on the stone surface

And this is a recent project — just two months old.

— Tile is not installed in the same plane:
• some pieces stick out
• others sink in
• visible dips and uneven areas

— Transitions and edges are sloppy.
Grout is left smeared, and finishing details were ignored.

— And here’s another major issue:

Tiles with sharp cut edges were installed in visible areas
instead of factory edges.

Factory edges are slightly rounded and clean.
Cut edges are sharp, rough, and visually obvious.

This kind of detail immediately exposes poor workmanship —
especially when it’s placed right in the most visible area.

Installed in a highly visible location.

Shower Failure in 2 Months (Part 1)

We audited this shower — and the problems are obvious.

The work was done recently.
But it’s already failing.

Here’s what we found first:

— Tile was installed directly over old drywall.
No waterproof panels. No proper system behind it.

— 45° mitered corners were filled with regular grout instead of epoxy.
Now every corner is already cracking.

— The biggest issue: the curb slope is built in the wrong direction.
Instead of directing water inside the shower,
the slope is pushing water outward.

Water is constantly leaking out of the shower area.

— Because of this неправильного уклона, geometry is already off:
the glass alignment shows it clearly
• gap at the bottom is wider
• gap at the top is tighter

That’s not a glass issue —
that’s a slope and level problem.

Pebble Stone Failing After 3 Years — This Is Not an Accident

We received a request from a homeowner whose shower was remodeled three years ago.
Now, the pebble stone tile is already coming loose from the shower pan.

Pebble stone does not fail on its own.
This is not bad luck.
This is a system failure.

Here’s why it happens:

1️⃣ Water Under the Tile

The number one cause is water trapped beneath the stone.
Improper waterproofing and lack of proper slope allow water to sit under the pebble stone, slowly breaking down the adhesive from below.

2️⃣ Wrong Materials

Pebble stone requires professional, moisture-resistant setting materials.
Using standard tile adhesive in a shower is a critical mistake — it usually fails within a few years.

3️⃣ Voids Beneath the Stone

Pebble stone varies in thickness.
If the base is not perfectly prepared, air pockets remain under the stones.

Where there is air + water, tile failure is inevitable.

4️⃣ Incorrect Slope to the Drain

When the slope is wrong, water does not drain properly.
It collects between the stones and destroys the system from the inside.

The Most Important Point

This is never just one stone.

If pebble stone starts coming loose, it means the entire shower pan system is already compromised.

Re-gluing stones is cosmetic.
The only real solution is a full shower pan rebuild with proper slope, materials, and waterproofing.

This is exactly why shower floors must be built as a complete system, not patched when they fail.

A “Simple Plumbing Repair” That Turned Into a Major Tile Problem

On this project, the homeowner contacted us after replacing plumbing inside the walls and asked to restore the tile.

At first, this should have been a small repair — replacing one, maybe two tiles.

But here’s the real problem.

The tile demolition was done by a plumber — and that’s a major mistake.

Plumbers are not trained to remove tile properly.
Instead of carefully cutting along grout joints, the tile was broken out aggressively.

What we found:
— cuts were made not along the joints
— the tile was cut in a zigzag pattern
— all surrounding tiles were chipped and damaged

As a result, it’s no longer a one-tile repair.

Now:
— six tiles are damaged
— including a tile that holds the shower glass
— the glass will need to be removed
— the scope and cost increased significantly

Instead of a minor fix, this turned into a much larger repair.

There’s more.

The plumber worked carelessly:
— tools and materials were placed inside the shower
— metal tools were left directly on the tile
— metal objects should never rest on tile surfaces

This shower has natural granite flooring.
Metal tools easily scratch and damage stone.

Tools were also left inside the niche, creating additional risk of damage.

Key Takeaway

Tile must be removed by tile professionals.

The correct process is:
— tile specialist removes tile
— plumber performs plumbing work
— tile specialist reinstalls the tile

Or a qualified tile professional who handles both steps properly.

Using the wrong specialist turns a small repair into an expensive problem.

Waterproofing Mistake That Requires a Full Tear-Out

During this project audit, we identified a critical waterproofing failure.

Non-waterproof panels were installed, and tile adhesive was applied directly on top of them.
The client planned to use RedGard over this surface, assuming it would provide protection.

This creates the illusion of waterproofing — but it’s a serious mistake.

Here’s why this system fails:

— Tile adhesive is not a waterproof substrate
— Adhesive is porous and absorbs moisture
— It is not designed to receive waterproofing membranes

RedGard applied over cured adhesive does not bond consistently:
— delamination
— bubbling
— micro-cracks over time

Covering seams with adhesive is not waterproofing.
Adhesive is not a sealant.

With constant moisture:
— water passes through the adhesive
— reaches the wall panels
— panels absorb moisture
— the entire system fails

Final Conclusion

This is not a repairable issue.

The only correct solution is:
— full demolition
— installation of proper waterproof panels
— application of a manufacturer-approved waterproofing system

Anything else is a temporary fix that will fail again.

$2.5 Million Home — Tile Audit (Video 6 of 6)

When Nothing Is Level — Anywhere

At this point, the problem is impossible to ignore.

— This trim strip is visibly tilted to the right.
— The fireplace shelf is sloping one way, while the fireplace itself leans another.

Look at the baseboards:
— in some areas, there’s almost no gap between the floor and the baseboard
— in others, the gap is so large you could fit a finger through it

And this isn’t isolated — it’s everywhere.

Doors don’t close properly.
They’re not adjusted.

Shelves are out of level.
Outlets are out of level.
The fireplace is out of level.

You don’t even need a level to see it —
it’s obvious with the naked eye.

This is a $2.5 million home.

And the work is careless across the board —
not just tile, but all finish work:
layout, leveling, alignment, coordination.

This is what happens when quality control is missing at every stage.

Price doesn’t guarantee quality.
Only proper oversight does.

$2.5 Million Home — Tile Audit (Video 4 of 6)

Small Gaps That Turn Into Big Failures

Here’s another area where problems start small — and get worse.

— You can see a gap that begins small and gradually increases.
This usually means the tile was installed incorrectly from the very beginning. The layout drifted, and no one corrected it.

— Wood baseboards were used in wet areas.
This is a bad decision. Water will always escape from the tub or shower, and wood baseboards will:
• absorb moisture
• crack
• swell
• eventually rot

In wet zones, these materials will fail over time.

— There’s a clear issue around the valve switch area.
The tile here is broken and cracked all around.

This usually points to a deeper problem behind the wall — movement, stress, or improper installation.
Regardless of the cause, the result is obvious:
the tile has completely shattered.

In high-end homes, these details aren’t minor.
They’re early warning signs of much bigger problems coming next.

More coming in Part 5.

A Floor Prep Mistake That Could've Cost $30,000
during a renovation audit on one of our projects, we discovered major mistakes that could have led to $30,000+ in damages and months of wasted time.

Here’s what happened:

1️⃣ Choosing Contractors Based Only on Price
The homeowner hired a team simply because they were the cheapest — without checking their background or qualifications.

❗If you want to know how to properly choose contractors, comment “PREP” and I’ll send you the same checklist we use to vet our own crews.

2️⃣ Poor Subfloor Demo
The old tile adhesive was only partially removed. Some areas were scraped, others left untouched — leaving major height differences. Any leveling on top of that would fail.

3️⃣ Dangerous Floor Prep for Large-Format Tile
The client planned to install large-format tile, which requires specific prep steps.
Instead of following proper procedures, the crew installed AQUABAR “B” paper — which is a v***r barrier used under hardwood, not tile or self-leveling.

Then they stapled metal lath on top of it and prepared to pour self-leveling mix.
🚨 That setup is a recipe for failure.

❌ Self-leveling compound does not bond to this paper
❌ It will crack, separate, and become unstable
❌ The tile will eventually fail and break apart

The correct process is to remove that paper completely and pour directly onto the approved subfloor.

4️⃣ Unnecessary Materials and Labor
They installed metal lath across the entire floor — but it’s only needed in areas where the floor is more than 1/4” uneven.
So the client paid for materials and labor they didn’t need.

💥 If they had continued with this setup, the whole floor would’ve cracked — and the client could’ve lost tens of thousands of dollars.

✅ We stopped it just in time and explained how to fix it properly.
Now the homeowner knows exactly how to move forward — safely and professionally.
