A study in restraint—where architectural design frames the view and materials do the talking. Layered neutrals, honed stone, and warm walnut create a quiet tension between softness and structure. Every sightline feels intentional, every detail considered.
This is living, refined.

Where architectural design becomes emotion.
A refined interplay of form, texture, and light defines this Geoff Sumich Design residence—where stone, glass, and warm wood tones create a sense of quiet, elevated living. Seamless indoor-outdoor flow and thoughtfully layered lighting make every space feel both intentional and inviting.

Romantic Modernism at its finest—designed not just to be seen, but to be experienced.

ABOUT GEOFF SUMICH
Straight out of architecture school at the age of 24, he moved from New Zealand to Southern California and established his practice in Orange County. The first decade of his career was dedicated to designing traditional homes, an experience that now informs and enriches his distinctive design approach.
A modernist by nature, he is known for a style that references and incorporates elements from the past while celebrating the simplicity and minimalism of modern design—an approach he calls “Romantic Modernism.” By incorporating materials such as wood, stone, steel, and glass, his work brings a timeless essence to each project, designed to become more beautiful with age.
From hand-selecting materials to providing on-site direction to stone masons and craftsmen, his deep passion for both design and ex*****on serves as the cornerstone of every project’s success.

📍 Newport Beach, California
A bold expression of coastal modernism where stone, glass, and warm wood converge in perfect proportion. Designed by Geoff Sumich, this waterfront residence captures light, volume, and horizon—framing harbor views through expansive walls of glass and layered architectural lines.
Double-height living spaces, sculptural staircases, and seamless indoor–outdoor flow define a home that is both striking and serene—timeless design set along the edge of the bay.

📍 Bel Air, California

A contemporary estate composed as a sequence of colonnades, courtyards, and light-filled galleries. Monumental limestone planes establish rhythm and proportion, while expansive glazing softens the threshold between interior and landscape.

Volume and void are carefully balanced—intimate music rooms, open-air loggias, and a serene pool terrace all anchored by a disciplined architectural grid. Natural materials, filtered daylight, and refined detailing create a timeless expression of modern classicism.

P R O C E S S
Every project begins in the model room — where ideas are shaped, tested, and refined by hand. Through an exploration of form, proportion, texture, and compositional harmony, each design evolves organically before ever reaching the computer. With 5 to 20 massing studies per project, the process is deliberate and rigorous, allowing pure and elemental forms to emerge.
Wood models introduce warmth and emotion, grounding the design in something tactile and timeless. From early iterations to the finished model, each phase reflects a commitment to clarity, simplicity, and enduring architectural expression.

Once refined in 3D, the design advances into exterior articulation and interior development — guided throughout construction by a rare, hands-on, deeply involved approach.

📍 Dana Point

A study in restraint and proportion, where sculpted concrete planes float effortlessly above the landscape. Expansive glazing dissolves the boundary between interior and horizon, framing sky, water, and curated greenery as living artwork. The elevated main level opens seamlessly to an infinity-edge pool, while the subterranean approach preserves the purity of the form above. Light, shadow, and material contrast—soft limestone against dark metal volumes—create a dynamic yet disciplined composition.

📍 Corona del Mar

An immersive study in light, landscape, and layered materiality. Glass walls dissolve into courtyard water features, warm wood ceilings float above sculptural volumes, and every axis is calibrated to frame sky, fire, and horizon. Indoor and outdoor spaces unfold seamlessly—intimate moments balanced with expansive entertaining. A refined expression of modern romantic coastal architecture designed by Geoff Sumich.
