Very sad news to report….we had a row of fabulous tall sunflowers growing and producing seeds for the birds and for next years flowers and SOMEONE cut the tops off of 25 of them and stole them! Who would do this? Only 2 sunflowers remain. This will be reported to the police. It is very troubling to know that we have to deal with this problem. We are reporting it here on Facebook so the public is aware as well. The flowers are placed in the garden for viewing….not for picking! Most people respect that. Unfortunately we will have to be mindful of this happening when we plan future garden additions. ☹️😤😔🌻

Here's A Look At What's Blooming Now!

Afternoon rains had me on the way to the gardens once the showers had passed.
I love the soft light and the possibility of rain-drops on flowers. I hit the rain-drop jackpot!

The Pink Roses are still blooming. The fragrance is amazing as you walk the stairs between the levels.

The Dahlias are blooming and looking amazing! There are so many beautiful varieties. Including the return of my personal favorite, Crème de Cassis. There had been 1 plant several years ago and literally disappeared overnight. I was excited to see it back this season. There is 1 bloom currently and it a stunningly gorgeous!

The terrace level that was planted last year looks spectacular.

If you have never seen “Strawberry Shake” Hydrangea here is your chance. They are quite “floofy” and greet you as you come into the gardens from the parking lot.

The volunteers have been busy spreading new bark and labeling many of the varieties of Dahlias.

If you can visit in person I encourage you to do so often. If that isn't an option stay tuned right here and enjoy the beauty from the comfort of your home.

The gardens are maintained by an all volunteer crew. New volunteers are always welcome. Work party information is posted on this page.

The newest bench in the Terrace Garden at Sequim's Carrie Blake Park/Water Demonstration Site was donated by her husband in memory of Donni Hatlestad. Donni was instrumental in the formation of a group of Master Gardeners who shared a vision with the City of Sequim for demonstration gardens to be created on the acres adjoining Carie Blake Park. Donni was on the leadership board which formed in 2007, designing the proposed Garden. Over almost twenty years, she was also a dedicated volunteer, putting in many hours of physical labor where her bench now sits—planting, weeding, putting in water lines, creating walkways, giving demonstrations and talks about the Garden plants, sharing her knowledge of horticulture and garden design. Her heritage, of an organization that maintains the Garden today, inspiring many local gardeners and sharing the beauty of flowers and gardens, is a mirror of her generous, creative, sparkling, loving self. Thank you, Donni and Bob.

WOW!! We had standing room only for our dahlia event on Saturday! It was a bit overcast, but that didn’t stop us! A bit of mayhem in the garden! Everyone had great fun in the garden clipping the dahlias and creating their arrangements. We thank everyone for coming and for their generous donations to help us continue to care for The Sequim Botanical Garden….a community treasure! 🌸🌺🌼❤️

Here's A Look At What's Blooming Now!

Waking up to heavy fog this morning had me on the way to the gardens. I love the soft light and the possibility of dew drops on flowers. While I didn't find as many dew drops as I had hoped, I had no shortage of gorgeous photo ops as you will see.

The Yellow and Pink Roses are still blooming. The fragrance is amazing as you walk the stairs between the levels.

The Dahlias are blooming and looking amazing!

The terrace that was planted last year is in almost full bloom and looks spectacular. It has a new edition this year of “Penstemon Barbatus Penstemon Prairie Dusk”.

If you have never seen “Strawberry Shake” Hydrangea here is your chance. They are quite “floofy” and greet you as you come into the gardens from the parking lot.

You will also see Sempervivum, Common House Leek aka Hens and Chicks. The flowers that bloom at the top of the stalks are beautiful.

There are 2 groups of multicolored Zinnias up on the top level right in front of the Sunflowers. They are beautiful pops of color.

The Lavender is looking great and the bee's were doing their job.

I even found 1 lone Iris that is still looking lovely.

The dahlias are in full bloom and this Saturday we will conduct our very popular floral design event! Bring your own VASE (and a box to carry it home), CLIPPERS and join us for the rare opportunity to enter our dahlia garden to select your favorites to create a beautiful summer vase! We will provide some greenery and some instruction so you can turn your creativity loose! So join your fellow dahlia lovers this Saturday August 22 at 10:00 AM….Carrie Blake Park…terrace garden. HELP! We need all available volunteers to help spread this pile of bark into the garden beds. We will need help tomorrow, Thursday August 13 at 10:00 AM Carrie Blake Park. With all hands on deck, we should be able to get it done relatively quickly. Most of it will be distributed on the lowest level nearest the pile. We will need shovelers, wheel barrowers, and rakers. If we don’t finish Thursday, we will finish up on Saturday. We are thankful for our new garden sponsor CASCADE BARK for their generous donation! Please come and HELP! THANK YOU!

Here's A Look At What's Blooming Now!

There is a stunning group of Lilies that greet you as you enter across the bridge. Their fragrance is lovely.

The Yellow and Pink Roses are in full bloom. The fragrance is amazing as you walk the stairs between the levels.

The Dahlias have started blooming and there will be many more in the coming weeks. It will be an impressive sight to see.

I even found beauty in the Globe Alliums that have finished their blooms this year.

This post includes 2 shots that are extra special to me. On July 22nd there was a new Memorial Bench installed on the top path near the waterfall. This bench is in memory of Donni Hatlestad who was a treasured friend. Donni recommended me to the garden manager several years ago for the volunteer photographer position. I am forever grateful to her and the gardens for this wonderful opportunity. She was so loved and is so missed every day. R.I.P Donni!

Hens and Chicks….. (Sempervivum), also called houseleeks, get their name from their ability to readily propagate via offsets, producing new baby plantlets, or chicks, that spread over time. Aside from their colorful and fleshy leaves, which grow in tight rosettes, hen and chicks plants also flower. However, this is usually a sign that the “mother hen” has reached the end of its life. It blooms only once and passes the torch to the chicks. They like full sun and well drained soil and can survive in poor rocky soil so they are popular in rock gardens. They are very drought tolerant and require very little care. Shown here is the same plant about a month apart. We have a variety of succulents and sedums in the garden. Our plan is to create a special garden for them and label the varieties to better show off their beauty. For right now…you can identify all of the different plants throughout the garden. Enjoy!🌸🌺🌼🌻
