Theme: Classical Japanese Aesthetic
Species: Acer palmatum ‘Arakawa’
Age: 25+ years

Composition
Primary: Japanese maple (Arakawa), informal upright, presented in a Tokoname bonsai pot with green namako glaze, set on a dark, Asian-inspired hardwood stand by Stands & Stones.
Accent: Ruffled mouse hosta in a round ceramic container by an Atlanta artist.

Story
The textured namako glaze of the pot crafted in the Tokoname region of Japan echoes and amplifies the rugged bark of the mature Arakawa maple, creating a quiet unity of container and tree. Harmony emerges through the interplay of green/gray tones across pot, bark, foliage, and moss.

The artist invites the viewer to look deeper—where repeating forms and textures suggest the patterned shells of sea turtles, suspended in stillness.

Inspired in part by the Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga, this work reflects both freshwater and saltwater worlds and the forms that connect them.
