Project Spotlight: The Sterility Lab

This Design-Build renovation project transformed three existing rooms within the Clinical Research Center on the NIH Bethesda Campus into a specialized Sterility Testing Laboratory. The new laboratory facility serves various Institutes and Centers at NIH, providing critical sterility testing services. While the laboratory is not involved in product manufacturing, the sterility testing processes required the facility to meet current cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Practice) standards due to the regulated environment necessary for the testing.

The facility was designed to meet stringent cGMP standards, which are critical for ensuring that sterility testing processes adhere to the highest quality and regulatory standards. The laboratory was also built to be ISO-8 classified, which is a standard for cleanrooms that helps control the environment’s contamination levels, such as airborne particles.

ISO-8 Classifications: The lab areas were designed with HEPA filtration to ensure that the air quality within the cleanroom spaces met the strict standards for sterility. The following spaces were created as part of the renovation:

-Gown-in Room
-Ante Room
-Sterility Testing Rooms
-BSL-2 Culture Rooms
-Gown-out/Waste Room

LSY led the renovation of the B3B Area of the Radiation Biology and Radiation Oncology Branches of the National Cancer Institute (NCI). This project involved the complete gut renovation of the existing space to accommodate a state-of-the-art research and clinical support facility for the Radiation Biology and Oncology departments. The renovation aimed to improve clinical capabilities while enhancing the overall research environment, with a focus on both clinical support and scientific research.

The renovation required significant modifications and upgrades to the building’s Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) systems and overall infrastructure to meet the demands of a modern clinical and research facility. These upgrades ensured that the facility could support the specialized equipment and research conducted in the laboratories and MRI suite while maintaining the highest standards of health and safety.

Building 10 is part of a larger complex of buildings on the NIH Bethesda campus, originally constructed in 1955. Over time, it had served various functions, including as patient care units, but the building was repurposed in this renovation project to accommodate BSL-2 laboratories, lab support areas, and administrative offices for multiple Institutes at NIH. The renovation was divided into two major phases, with each phase transforming specific floors of the building.

The renovation of Building 10 required a comprehensive redesign of both the interior, exterior and infrastructure, converting former patient care units and offices into specialized research environments. The design also incorporated upgrades to mechanical, electrical, plumbing, security, fire protection, and life safety systems, while respecting the building’s legacy and maintaining operational continuity throughout construction.

Building 4, constructed in 1941, is one of the earliest structures on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Bethesda campus. Prior to this renovation project, the building had not undergone significant updates since 1985. The building is occupied by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and houses specialized laboratories and associated spaces, including an insectary, an animal research facility, and a microscopy core.

LSY’s design team developed a strategy for a comprehensive two-phase renovation of the entire building, upgrading both the research laboratories and the building’s infrastructure to meet contemporary NIH standards. This project aimed to provide state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and modernized support and administrative spaces throughout the building. The key focus was on upgrading inefficient building systems and improving the quality of the laboratory spaces to meet the rigorous needs of scientific research.

The achieved LEED Silver certification. LSY worked closely with both end users (the NIAID researchers) and facility management teams to integrate a variety of energy-saving and sustainable strategies. Key sustainable features incorporated into the renovation include:

-Water Use Reduction:
-Lighting and Temperature Controls:
-Daylighting
-Building System Upgrades:

LSY’s comprehensive involvement in this project, from design through post-construction, ensured that the newly renovated building met the needs of NIAID’s specialized research programs while also providing a modern, efficient, and sustainable environment for scientific discovery
