At this home in Springfield, our inspector found deteriorated plywood along the eave and improper nail placement through the existing step flashing—two details that deserved attention as part of the upcoming roof replacement.

We also documented other signs of an aging roofing system, including granule loss, nail pops, lifted and missing shingles, and deteriorated flashing.

A good inspection looks at how all those components work together, not just what’s visible from the street.

That's where this Springfield project started.

After tear-off, six sheets of plywood were replaced where needed. The project also included new flashing at the chimney, cut-in ridge ventilation, and a complete Owens Corning roofing system finished with TruDefinition Duration shingles in Williamsburg Gray.

And this is where it ended. ☝️

Ever wondered what's actually underneath a ridge vent? 👀

This is it.

The first photo shows an opening cut along the peak of this Springfield roof deck. That opening creates an exhaust path for air from the attic.

Then the ridge vent is installed over it and finished with ridge cap shingles, as you see in the second photo.

So when you hear a roofer say we're going to "cut in a ridge vent," now you know exactly what that means. 🙌

Roof replacement is also an opportunity to look at how the entire roofing system works together, including ventilation.

What's underneath your shingles? Sometimes you don't completely know until tear-off. 🔨

Once we removed the old roofing from this Springfield home, our crew could inspect the exposed wood and identify exactly what needed to be replaced.

The answer wasn't an entirely new roof deck: six sheets of plywood were replaced where needed.

With a sound deck established, installation could move forward with the protective layers of the new Owens Corning roofing system.

It's one of the reasons a roof is much more than the shingles you see from the street. 🏠

Roof replacement gets messy before it gets pretty. 😅🏠

Tear-off means thousands of nails, pieces of old shingles, and roofing debris have to come down before the new system can go on.

That's why property protection matters. At this Springfield home, tarps helped protect the areas surrounding the house while our crew removed the existing roofing materials.

And there's another reason tear-off matters: once the old roof is gone, we can finally inspect the wood deck beneath it and address any damage before covering it with a new roofing system.

Quite a transformation for one little townhouse. 🤎🏠

This Alexandria project started with an aging roofing system and visible staining beneath portions of the roof deck and ended with a completely rebuilt roof assembly.

After the full plywood redeck, we installed an Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration roofing system in Brownwood, updated the roof ventilation, and finished the project with new white seamless gutters and downspouts.

And Brownwood was a great choice here. Its mix of warm and deep brown tones complements the tan siding and dark shutters without getting lost among the neighboring roofs.

This Alexandria project also included replacement of the home's gutters and downspouts.

We installed new white 5-inch seamless K-style aluminum gutters with hidden brackets and new 2"x3" downspouts, completing the roofline and providing a properly sloped path for rainwater coming off the new roof.

Now the new roof starts taking shape. 🏠🛠️

With the full plywood redeck completed, our Alexandria crew began installing the protective layers beneath the shingles, including ice-and-water protection in vulnerable areas and synthetic underlayment across the remaining deck.

The project also included an important change to ventilation. The existing powered attic fan was removed, and the opening was closed so the new roof could rely on ridge ventilation rather than combining two systems that can interfere with proper attic airflow.

A roof is a system, not just a layer of shingles.

This one needed more than a few sheets of plywood. 🪵🔨

After tear-off, the existing decking on this Alexandria townhouse was removed and replaced with an entirely new roof deck.

Our crew installed 1/2-inch CDX exterior-grade plywood with plywood clips between the trusses, creating a solid, uniform surface for the new roofing system.

The shingles will eventually get all the attention, but the work beneath them is what makes the finished roof possible.
