🔨 This is the part of a roof replacement most homeowners never get to see, but it makes a huge difference.

For this Alexandria project, the original roof decking was upgraded with new plywood sheathing to create a stronger, more uniform surface beneath the new roofing system.

The inspection phase revealed that the older plank decking was in poor condition and could affect long-term fastening performance, so a full plywood overlay was the right solution before installing the new Owens Corning Duration roof in Peppercorn.

We also installed H-clips between trusses to help improve support and stability across the roof deck.

A roof is only as strong as the surface beneath it, and this upgrade helps set the foundation for a longer-lasting roofing system built to modern installation standards.

🛠️ Every quality roof replacement starts with what’s underneath.

For this Alexandria project, our crew began by carefully removing the existing roofing system and protecting the property with full perimeter tarping before exposing the original roof deck.

During tear-off, we confirmed several of the decking concerns identified during the inspection. To provide a stronger foundation for the new roof, this home is receiving a full plywood overlay before installation of the new Owens Corning Duration shingles in Peppercorn.

Many homeowners focus on the shingles, but the roof deck underneath is just as important. A solid decking surface helps improve fastening strength, durability, and overall performance of the roofing system over time.

This project is already taking shape, and the transformation is going to look incredible once complete. 🔨

🔍 Not every roofing problem is obvious from the ground.

During this inspection in Alexandria, our team found several issues contributing to the roof’s deterioration, including granule loss, cracked shingles, improperly sealed valleys, missing drip edge, and ventilation problems in the attic.

One of the biggest concerns was the closed-cut valley installation shown in these photos. Roof valleys handle a huge amount of water during heavy rain, and when they’re not sealed properly, water can eventually work its way beneath the shingles.

We also documented missing drip edge along the eaves and rakes, as well as decking conditions that may not provide adequate fastening support for a new roofing system.

The good news? These are all issues that can be properly corrected during a replacement with updated installation methods, improved ventilation, and a complete roofing system built to current standards.

A detailed inspection helps homeowners understand what’s really happening on the roof before small problems turn into interior damage.

✨ Finished roof replacement in Springfield, VA.

This home now has a complete Owens Corning TruDefinition® Duration® roofing system in Williamsburg Gray, and the final result gave the property a clean, updated appearance while still fitting naturally within the neighborhood.

Behind the finished shingles, this project involved extensive preparation work, including the removal of multiple roofing layers, full redecking on the original roof sections, upgraded ventilation, synthetic underlayment, and detailed flashing integration throughout the system.

One thing projects like this remind homeowners is that some of the most important roofing work happens underneath the finished shingles. Proper ventilation, waterproofing layers, flashing details, and structural preparation all work together to support long-term roof performance.

The Williamsburg Gray color worked especially well with this home’s exterior and mature tree-lined setting. 👏

At A&M Roofing, we believe homeowners deserve more than a quick estimate; they deserve a thorough evaluation, clear recommendations, and a roofing system built for long-term performance. Contact us today to schedule a free estimate!

🔨 The new Williamsburg Gray shingles are now installed on this Springfield home, and the transformation came out beautifully.

The dimensional look of the Owens Corning TruDefinition® Duration® shingles really helped modernize the roof's appearance while keeping the home’s original character intact.

This project included much more than shingles alone, with upgraded ventilation, reglet-cut chimney flashing, synthetic underlayment, waterproofing, and the removal of the older attic fan as part of the complete roofing system.

One thing we see fairly often on older homes is ventilation systems that were added over time without proper balance. This roof now has updated intake and ridge ventilation designed to work together more effectively as a complete system.

The Williamsburg Gray color turned out to be a great fit for this home. 👏

🏠 Roof preparation is continuing in Springfield as this Owens Corning roof replacement moves into the waterproofing stage.

With the redecking work now complete on the original roof sections, our crew has started installing synthetic underlayment and waterproofing protection throughout the roof system before the Williamsburg Gray shingles go on.

Homes with additions and multiple roof elevations, like this one, require extra attention around transition areas and lower-slope sections to properly direct water away from vulnerable areas over time.

A lot of homeowners focus on the finished shingles, but the waterproofing layers underneath are what help protect the structure during heavy rain, snow, and long-term exposure to the weather. 👏

Full Redecking Underway in Springfield 🏠🔨

Once the old roofing materials were removed on this Springfield project, the next step was rebuilding the foundation of the roof itself.

The original section of the home required a full plywood redecking to meet modern standards before the new Owens Corning roofing system could be installed. Our crew installed new 1/2” CDX plywood with proper plywood clips between trusses to create a stronger, more stable foundation for the roof.

This phase is one homeowners rarely see, but it’s one of the biggest factors in how a roof performs long-term. New shingles installed over weak or outdated decking can only do so much; the structure underneath matters just as much.

🔎 Some roofing problems never show themselves from the ground.

During this inspection in Springfield, our team found multiple hidden issues within the roofing system, including chimney-leak staining, aging roof decking, and areas that no longer meet current structural code requirements.

One of the biggest findings was evidence of moisture intrusion near the chimney, likely caused by deteriorated flashing over time.

We also documented original plywood decking measuring approximately 3/8” thickness installed over 24” truss spacing without H-clips, a condition that can contribute to roof movement, sagging, and reduced long-term support.

And because of the extended front overhang on this home, the new roofing system will require additional ice & water shield protection to meet modern code requirements and improve protection against water intrusion. ❄️

A lot of homeowners think roof problems start with missing shingles… but many of the most important issues actually begin underneath the roof surface.

Detailed roof inspections performed by our HAAG-certified team help identify underlying structural, ventilation, and moisture-related concerns before larger issues develop.
