You may not think about legislation every day, but it can have a real impact on the way you practice.

Licensing requirements, building codes, procurement rules, project delivery methods, liability issues, and firm operations are all shaped by decisions made at the state level.

Advocacy helps ensure architects have a voice in those conversations before decisions are made.

AIA Illinois helps keep you informed, engaged, and prepared to speak up on the issues that affect your work, your clients, and the communities you serve.

The strongest communities are shaped by people who care enough to stay involved.

Architects bring more than design expertise to the table. They bring local knowledge, leadership, and a long-term vision for how communities grow. Every project has the potential to improve quality of life when architects are part of the conversation.

Architects bring value to every project, but the work cannot stop there.

The profession needs architects who are willing to speak up, show up, and advocate for the role they play in shaping communities. That means looking beyond the next deadline or the next project and thinking about the future of the profession as a whole.

Jeremy Gentile, Past President of AIA Illinois, said it well: architects have to get better at advocating for themselves and the value they bring to the public.

A stronger profession starts with architects who are willing to see the bigger picture.

Students do not have to wait until they are years into their careers to start thinking like leaders. 🏛️

They already have something valuable: the architect brain. The ability to think critically, solve hard problems, and look at challenges in a different way.

Add in new tools, new software, and a generation that is already learning how to work with AI, and students have more to bring to the table than they may realize. 💡

Leadership can start with speaking up, asking better questions, sharing a new approach, or helping others see a problem differently.

Students, your perspective has value. Stay connected, stay curious, and keep finding ways to use it.
