For the students who attend, Desiderata offers more than a classroom, it’s a place to build life skills alongside a high school education. When Phoenix Union High School District moved the program from its original 1920s home into a 30,000-square-foot industrial building, our team gutted the shell and reimagined it from the ground up: classrooms, therapy rooms, a kitchen, and a fitness space, all arranged to support how students actually learn and grow.

Color and light do a lot of the work here. Glazing in shades of magenta, gold, and teal casts moving patterns across the halls, and a canopy of hand-formed aluminum leaves filters daylight over the reception area — a quiet nod to the mesquite trees just outside.

Grateful to have partnered with Phoenix Union High School District on a place built around the students it serves.

Back to school means walking past twenty plus years of ASU history for our team.

Designed alongside Gensler and dedicated in 2004, Lattie F. Coor Hall anchors the heart of ASU’s Tempe campus in board-formed concrete and layered glass. Look closer at the facade and you’ll find it’s telling its own story: etched letterforms pulled from languages around the world, a public art collaboration with artist BJ Krivanek that turns the building itself into a meditation on how we learn to communicate.

As students file back into these classrooms, we’re glad the courtyards are still sun-washed, the central breezeway still glows after dark, and the lecture halls are still filling up in Sun Devil maroon. Welcome back, Tempe.

Back to school at ASU Thunderbird School of Global Management. Clad in Arizona sandstone with silver metal and shade louvers on the north and west faces, the 111,000 sq ft building is tracking LEED Platinum and shares its city block with another Jones Studio building, the Beus Center for Law & Society. Recessed gardens fed by captured rainwater cool the plazas below.

Back to school in Kingman, Arizona

Mohave College sits in a valley between the Hualapai and Cerbat Mountain Ranges, right at the edge of the Mohave Desert. As a commuter campus, Mohave College needed one clear, welcoming hub — a place where students could find services, study, and gather, all in one spot.

The Student Services Center does exactly that. Sited at the geographic center of campus, it consolidates administrative offices, library stacks, a reading room, tutoring center, and computing commons under one shaded, sunlit roof — with terraces and courtyards that carry the desert landscape right up to the glass.
Warm wood beams and stucco walls move seamlessly from outside to in, and an expansive roof lifts toward the south to bring in soft clerestory light. It’s a building built around one idea: give students a reason to stay on campus, connect, and call it their own.

Have you been to a performance at the South Mountain Community College Performing Arts Center?

The 43,000 sq ft building was built to blend into the existing campus: glass and steel wrapped in rusted louvers that shade the desert sun by day and glow like a beacon by night. Inside, a main stage and two black box theaters give SMCC’s performing arts students room to rehearse, build sets, and step into the spotlight all season long.

Here’s to a semester full of first rehearsals, opening nights, and everything in between.

One week until students head back to school at ASU’s Polytechnic campus.

Interdisciplinary Science and Technology Building 3 (ISTB3) sits on what used to be Williams Field Air Force Base, now a LEED Gold home for research in applied psychology, plant-derived pharmaceuticals, and applied biological sciences.

The building was designed around the idea that discovery happens in the in-between spaces. Labs and offices wrap around courtyard gardens, irrigated with harvested water, so researchers from different disciplines cross paths on their way to somewhere else.

The perforated concrete walls, patterned after artist and architect Paolo Soleri’s sculptural work, filter light in and let hot air out.

We’re excited for students and faculty to head back to school at the University of Arizona College of Architecture, Planning, and Landscape Architecture in Tucson.

Jones Studio’s renovation and addition brought three design disciplines under one shared roof. Glazed studios, exposed building systems, and a garden watered by rainwater harvested straight off the building - the architecture itself is a lesson in the Sonoran Desert.

Here’s to another year of students learning to design for the place they’re standing in.

Fall semester is about to begin at Mesa Community College, and its Performing Arts Center opens its doors to another year of student musicians, actors, and technicians.

The building started as a movie house that had fallen into disrepair. Its transformation into a 19,500 sq ft new and 24,550 sq ft remodeled facility gave the Fiesta District rehearsal rooms, classrooms, and faculty offices built around a sustainable design ethic and a connection to the Sonoran Desert.

Even the exterior carries the rhythm of what happens inside — the masonry wall’s diagonal pattern traces the clarinet glissando that opens George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, and stanchions salvaged from the original theater seats now mark the courtyard, casting shadows that shift with the sun.

Continuing our back to school highlights - this time, we’re headed to downtown Phoenix.

ASU’s Beus Center for Law & Society, home to the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law’s was built to inspire connection and learning — six stories in the heart of downtown Phoenix, designed in collaboration with Ennead Architects.

One of the many aspects that makes this building so unique is how the space flows together. The law library spills across floors with no thresholds turning study time into something communal rather than closed off — exactly the kind of “radical accessibility” this building was built around.

From the shaded Yavapai National Courtyard to the sky bridge linking the east and west wings, every space here was designed to pull the practice of law out into public life.
