Welcome to my new before-and-after series! ๐Ÿฅฐ I take you through my thinking as I design a space โ€” my โ€œprocess,โ€ as it were. Pretty pictures are involved too, of course. I hope you enjoy it!

This was a super fun project: a historic townhouse with the challenge of a loooong shoebox-shaped front room. You know the kind. Hereโ€™s how we made this color-and-pattern-loving clientโ€™s challenging space amazing.

Itโ€™s Wallpaper Wednesday! Today we feature Brunschwig & Filsโ€™ Les Touches.

introduced Les Touches in 1965, and the pattern soon became a Brunschwig classic. (Interestingly, โ€œtouchesโ€ translates to โ€œkeysโ€ or โ€œstrokesโ€ฆโ€ I guess thatโ€™s close to โ€œdabs,โ€ which is what Iโ€™d assumed.) According to handwritten records, Les Touches is inspired by post-WWII black and white photographs, but the connection between this inspiration and the pattern remains a mystery. Referred to most often as a stylized animal print, Les Touches is a staple of the Le Jardin Chinois collection.

Today, Les Touches comes in 18 colorways, but the blue colorway remains iconic. Iโ€™ve used Les Touches for window treatments and upholstery, but I canโ€™t wait to try it as wallpaper!

Schumacherโ€™s Chiang Mai Dragon is a wallpaper icon. Itโ€™s so ubiquitous that I assumed it had been around for decades. Mais au contraire, mon frรจre: Schumacher released the design in 2006! The pattern is evidently based on a 1920s block print; Iโ€™d love to see the source material :).

It comes in many delicious colorways and some inadvisable ones...you canโ€™t be perfect all the time, even though Schumacher usually comes close.

I LOVE large-scale wallpaper. I mean, REALLY large. It works especially well in double-height spaces like this one: the huge pattern creates drama and holds your interest across a large expanse of wall that otherwise would be a whole lotta nothing. Itโ€™s exciting.

Timorous Beasties has mastered the art of large-scale wallpaper. Because Totem Damask is SO dramatic, we did it on one wall only. Then on all the other walls โ€” also double-height โ€” we did the smaller scale Deconstructed Stripe. (Look carefully and you can see it!) Large justaposted with smallโ€ฆyou know thatโ€™s one of my biggest tips for mixing patterns ๐Ÿ˜Š

If you want space to feel alive and interesting, consider going big. You know what they say: Go big and go home ;)
