It’s Wallpaper Wednesday! Today we feature Brunschwig & Fils’ Les Touches.

introduced Les Touches in 1965, and the pattern soon became a Brunschwig classic. (Interestingly, “touches” translates to “keys” or “strokes…” I guess that’s close to “dabs,” which is what I’d assumed.) According to handwritten records, Les Touches is inspired by post-WWII black and white photographs, but the connection between this inspiration and the pattern remains a mystery. Referred to most often as a stylized animal print, Les Touches is a staple of the Le Jardin Chinois collection.

Today, Les Touches comes in 18 colorways, but the blue colorway remains iconic. I’ve used Les Touches for window treatments and upholstery, but I can’t wait to try it as wallpaper!

Schumacher’s Chiang Mai Dragon is a wallpaper icon. It’s so ubiquitous that I assumed it had been around for decades. Mais au contraire, mon frère: Schumacher released the design in 2006! The pattern is evidently based on a 1920s block print; I’d love to see the source material :).

It comes in many delicious colorways and some inadvisable ones...you can’t be perfect all the time, even though Schumacher usually comes close.

I LOVE large-scale wallpaper. I mean, REALLY large. It works especially well in double-height spaces like this one: the huge pattern creates drama and holds your interest across a large expanse of wall that otherwise would be a whole lotta nothing. It’s exciting.

Timorous Beasties has mastered the art of large-scale wallpaper. Because Totem Damask is SO dramatic, we did it on one wall only. Then on all the other walls — also double-height — we did the smaller scale Deconstructed Stripe. (Look carefully and you can see it!) Large justaposted with small…you know that’s one of my biggest tips for mixing patterns 😊

If you want space to feel alive and interesting, consider going big. You know what they say: Go big and go home ;)

“Four floors of happy—come on in.” ☀️

That was the goal for this four-story Friendship Heights home—and we had so much fun bringing it to life.

☀️ On the top floor: a sunny family room with kelly green grasscloth walls, custom built-ins, and a gallery wall of English antique bird prints.

🎨 On the main floor: crisp white walls in the dining room layered with patterned chairs and window treatments.

🐾 Downstairs: a teenager- and dog-friendly game room built for living, lounging, and laughter.

We mixed iconic patterns (yes, that’s Josef Frank’s Citrus Garden), custom furniture, and playful color to create a home that feels joyful in every season.

Slide through for a peek inside.

Gentle Readers, let your home give your books a hug!

In this Kalorama house, we gave these built-ins the VIP treatment – because your favorite stories deserve more than a dusty shelf.

Whether it’s a cozy book nook, a library wall, or a sun-drenched corner chair, we believe books should feel at home, too.

📚

(P.S. My own book, My Neighbor Saw Me Naked and Other Reasons You Need Drapes, is also happiest when it’s embraced by a snug shelf – or, better yet, by you.)

Link to pre-order in bio. ✨
