My husband and I are raising chickens and growing as much food as possible on our tiny homestead. This is our story. I’m here to tell you that you can do it!

We started slow and small in 2023. Our chicken run and garden has tripled since then.

As I’m transitioning to only being allowed to have 6 hens, I’m thinking about all that I have learned from raising a beautiful self sufficient flock and hatching tons of chicks each spring. I will truly miss hatching and brooding these babies. I would love to offer hatching services for other chicken keepers. Is that a thing? Has anyone done it regularly? Just because the city restricts our chickens outside, doesn’t mean they can tell me what I can & can’t do inside my own home. Share your thoughts & ideas…

We are in zone 6b so garlic goes in by Halloween and out by July 4th. This year we only planted bulbs from our own harvest last year. Wish us luck!

So due to the new city ordinance, we are down to 6 hens. Back to where I started before chicken math took hold. They were all hatched here this past spring. It’s a big adjustment but I have heard from the people that have the rest of my flock and they are all doing great!

Planting beans in your garden is beneficial for a few reasons. They add nitrogen back to the soil, they are a great “chop & drop” plant to act as mulch, they are also a companion plant to provide shade and deter some pest, and of course, they are a nutrient rich food that is easy to store. I threw out handfuls from a soup mix package from the grocery store and I’m just starting to pull the dried beans. I’m getting a ton already and still have a bunch growing and more drying on the vine. For me, it’s extending our harvest season. There is always something new to try in the garden. 🪏

Well my heart is broken. Our city passed a new law that we can only have 6 hens, that’s it, just 6. We have been forced to downsize. I am so happy that they went to my two most trusted chicken keeping friends and a Montessori school. They will all have happy lives where they are. We still have 6 so for now we will enjoy them and concentrate on our gardening! I am sad but still living my dream ❤️

Mama hen has her babies on the roosting bar! They are still so small. It’s fascinating how quickly they learn.
