Some rooms ask to be rushed through. This one insists you stay. Our Elegant Parisian Row Home renovation began with one deceptively simple brief: make it feel like it has always been here. Music to a designer's ears! A custom island/table and stools, paneling, antique mirror and bistro shelving help make it the case. Swipe to see how every corner tells a different part of the story.

After seeing Les Misérables with my family, I couldn’t stop thinking about the power of experiencing creativity together — the emotion, storytelling, artistry, craftsmanship and collective energy that makes live theater so moving. It reminded me so much of the design process.

Yes, our work involves budgets, timelines, plans, and logistics. But the magic happens in the human moments — gathered around the worktable layering textured neutrals, solving a space plan to maximize visibility and flow, designing a loft seating area, sketching a custom stair light, sourcing vintage accessories or discovering the perfect material that suddenly makes the whole story click into place.

Those moments of collaboration, curiosity and shared excitement are what make great design feel alive.

That’s the theater of design. Head over to Substack for more: https://open.substack.com/pub/twohandsinteriors/p/3-the-theater-of-design?r=6uexrg&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=true

As we move into the long weekend, we’re grateful for homes that hold memory, conversation, celebration and rest. Wishing everyone a meaningful Memorial Day weekend filled with beauty, connection and a little slowing down.

When it comes to summer decorating, there is no one size fits all approach. Light tones can make your space feel fresh, open and airy, while darker tones bring warmth, depth and a sophisticated mood that still feels inviting. Whether you love soft neutrals and sunlit spaces or rich textures and bold contrast, both styles can create a beautiful summer home when designed correctly. What's important is choosing an atmosphere that feels most like you.

Midwest summers have their own rhythm. Longer evenings. Screen doors opening. Kids in and out of the house. Dinner outside whenever possible. We love interiors that respond to the season quietly — lighter textiles, relaxed styling, rooms that invite people to linger a little longer. Not a total transformation. Just thoughtful shifts that make home feel in step with life.

Karen had to take a beloved walnut tree down on her property and had the foresight to call our good friend Andy Mangin of Mango Woodworks to see if he wanted to salvage any of the wood for some of his beautiful woodworking. He did and returned this beautiful hand turned bowl.

Head on over to Substack for more thoughts on why sometimes the tree has to come down for the sunlight to come through: https://twohandsinteriors.substack.com/p/2-more-light-through-the-front-windows

To stair runner or to not stair runner. That is the question. ... Stair runners are fun. They soften the transition between floors, adding warmth, texture, and a sense of quiet continuity throughout a home. Beyond their practicality underfoot, they’re an opportunity to introduce pattern and personality in a way that makes even utilitarian spaces feel thoughtful and layered.

We started the design knowing our client wanted drama! But also, somewhere still relaxing enough for sleep. The bold mural in neutral tones opens the room up into a peaceful panoramic.

What was the jump off point in this warm, craftsman-style kitchen? In this space, which features rich wood beams, dark cabinetry, a marble-topped island and a sunlit window, we started with the directive to open things up but keep it cozy. Clearing up lines of site and flow were important for function, but sticking with beautiful woods and natural materials kept the craftsman warmth.
