-truths about men and grief-

Men are hardwired to be fixers and protectors. When something breaks, they grab their tools and they fix it.

But death is the one thing that cannot be fixed. There is no tool, no overtime shift, and no physical effort that can change what happened on Friday. When a fixer, a protector, a provider runs into a problem that is completely unfixable, it causes an intense, agonizing internal turmoil, an emotional wall- two hands cannot fix.

When the crews gather tomorrow morning, surrounded with a heavy loud silence that Holden isn't there suiting up with them, I hope they find comfort knowing he had their backs and honor him by showing up for themselves every single day, in whatever capacity that looks like. That agonizing silence isn't defeat- that silence is a loud presence of the love, respect and honor they share only among themselves.

These men spend more time together than with their own families and there's a deep level of respect a man shares with their team who also chooses to lace up, strap on a belt up and face the grueling day's work together. All sharing one common goal, to provide, protect and fix today's problems. There is no better way to honor Holden then to continue that common goal.

Watching Hayes watch you men yesterday share the best parts of his dad will leave his son with the legacy and honor Holden strived for.

There is no right or wrong way to grieve.
But there is no fixing the unfixable.

It is with an incredibly heavy heart that we share the devastating news of the passing of one of our own, Holden.

Holden was only 31 years old, the impact he left on the CKG family was immense. He was a deeply respected teammate, friend, and a man who showed up for us every single day proudly.

Holden was CKG through and through. He took so much pride in working with us that, as his mom shared with James and Cory, she could never get him out of his CKG gear no matter where they went. He loved his crew, he never wanted to let his lifelong brother Cory down, and that he held a deep respect and love for James.

He wore the gear so faithfully that it became a running joke with the guys. Just recently on his well deserved vacation, the crew spotted Holden “in the wild” at a stoplight without his CKG gear on. They obviously started giving him a hard time for “being dressed up” on his day off.

Looking back, we are even more grateful for the memories we made celebrating together, as a family, at our company party on the 18th. We are honored for the years Holden dedicated and shared with us, and very proud to call him our family.

Above all else, Holden was a proud, devoted father. His 9-year-old son, Hayes, lived with him and was his whole life. This past Friday, his only focus was getting home so he could be there to greet Hayes who has been away for camp. Thankfully he was able to see Hayes just one last time. I hope Hayes knows how proud he was to be his dad, and remembers him as always showing up for him. Hayes your dad worked extremely hard, to provide for you but mostly so he could be a dad you’d be proud of.

To Holden’s mom, his son Hayes, his lifelong brother Cory, his brothers, his crew and all of his family, we are all grieving alongside you. We hope his family and especially Holden know how much we truly valued, loved and respected him.

We are setting up a donation box at the shop to help support Hayes and his family as they navigate this unimaginable loss.

Moving forward, we would like to invite our working partners and contractors to consider allowing us to place donation boxes in your offices to help expand our support. Once Holden’s family has had some time to grieve and process, we will also share a direct and digital way to donate for those who wish to contribute from afar.
