Strawberry plug orders are beginning! A plug is a small plant rooted in soil. You plant the plug in the fall and you will have loads of berries in the spring. Plugs arrive in early October. Varieties are: Camarosa, Chandler, Sweet Charlie, Rocco and Ruby June. 25 plugs are $33 and 50 plugs are $42 (plus tax). Money is due at pick up in October but I need orders by July 13th. This is our 6th season offering plugs for sale. This is a much more cost effective option than buying potted strawberry plants in the spring. Let me know what questions you have!

I share this every year but this year, I’m using green light cucumbers. I love a crunchy, crispy pickle. I haven’t had any success canning pickles. So, I buy my favorite expensive pickles, keep the pickle juice, slice the blossom ends off my pickles, spear them, and pack them in the jar. Within about a week, I have pickles. I usually do this about 4 times with the same brine. (If you like a spicy pickle, throw in a jalapeño. So yummy!)

Native milkweed available at 14840 Cool Springs Rd Cleveland $10 each. Let me know if you want me to hold one for you. Why should you plant native milkweed? 1. This is a food source for the migrating monarchs. They lay their eggs on these plants and will make their cocoons on them as well. 2. It’s a native plant that you see in side ditches and fields but is usually mowed or sprayed during the migration season. 3. It’s a native perennial. So it survives better in our climate as well as comes back every year.

A common question is why do we hand pollinate squash? I only hand pollinate when each plant is producing one to two flowers. Once the plants are full of blooms, you don’t need to hand pollinate. We plant flowers that the bees love, but sometimes the pollinators take a minute to get here. This squash right here is what it looks like when you have a bloom that is not pollinated.

Zeb wanted to show you how to pollinate a squash. (He says zucchini at the beginning but meant squash) This is a great option if you don’t have many pollinators yet. If you have small squash that turn black on the blossom end, it is usually due to not being pollinated.
