This weekend, I have many plants out that are half off! One gallon pots are now 5 each. If you see they’re marked 10, ignore it and I’ll take 5 for it. Blue Mistflowers and Swamp Sunflowers are about to bloom! And the Oxeye Sunflowers are currently blooming 🌼

I’ve added Smooth Hedgenettle (Stachys tenuifolia) and Purple Bluets (Houstonia purpurea) to the stand this morning! Also, a plug tray (38 plugs) of Wild Petunia for 30! Wild Petunias are champs in super dry soil, they are like cacti 😂

I highly recommend Biennial Beeblossom (Oenothera gaura)! It's been in full bloom for weeks, with fresh flowers opening every morning. It’s currently the favorite among the bumblebees! As the name suggests, it's biennial, but it produces plenty of seeds. I use these to create protective walls around slower growing young native plants, forming “Beeblossom fortresses” 🙂 Beeblossoms thrive in full sun and dry soil and they make an excellent choice for a late season bloomer. While I'm sold out for this year, I'll be happy to share seeds once they're ready!

I’ve added additional species on the stand today!

Maryland Golden Asters (Chrysopsis mariana, PA listed as Threatened)
Pearly Everlastings (Anaphalis margaritacea)
Golden Alexander (Zizia aurea)
Blue Flag Iris (Iris versicolor)
Butterfly Milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa)
Oxeye Sunflower (Heliopsis helianthoides)
Smooth Petunia (Ruellia strepens, PA listed as Threatened)
Blue Stemmed Goldenrod (Solidago caesia)
Eastern Columbine (Aquilegia canadensis)
Blue Mistflower (Conoclinium coelestinum)
Purple Rocket (Iodanthus pinnatifidus, PA listed as Endangered)

Also, many plants are host plants and currently have young caterpillars on them! So don’t be surprised if you see some leaves eaten 🙂 That’s a good thing! I try to move them to my large parent plants but I may miss some of them as camouflage can fool the human eye. But, you may end up taking some baby butterflies home with you 😂

Here’s a close up of a Sleepy Orange butterfly laying her eggs on Maryland Senna (Senna marilandica), a native plant that plays a crucial role in supporting local wildlife. Much like how Monarchs depend on Milkweed, the Sleepy Orange relies on Sennas and Partridge Pea as host plants for its caterpillars.

Maryland Senna typically reaches a height of 2-5 feet and blooms from July to September. It thrives in full sun and prefers medium to dry soils.

As a Pennsylvania native, Maryland Senna is well suited to our environment. It’s an excellent choice for gardeners looking to support native species and promote biodiversity. Watching these caterpillars grow is a reminder of the important role native plants play in our ecosystems.
