The festive season is six weeks away, and the patio is where most of it will happen. If your cement pavers look patchy and stained, late October is the time to sort them.

How to do it properly with Prominent Paints Premium Roof and Paving:

✔ Clean the pavers thoroughly with a high-pressure washer and let them dry
✔ Prime with one coat of Surface Restorer
✔ Apply two coats of Premium Roof and Paving, allowing the recoat time on the tin between coats
✔ Check the forecast. The fresh coating should not see rain for 24 hours
✔ Give it time to cure fully before heavy use. Plan the job a good week or more before your first big braai

Two honest cautions. Painted paving can be slippery when wet, so it is not the right choice for sloped driveways or ramps. And it is not for highly polished cement or floors already coated with gloss enamel.

Painted the front wall a bold red or a deep yellow, and two summers later it looks tired while the white side wall still looks new? That is not bad paint. It is how colour behaves in South African sun.

Our new article, Colour Is a Performance Decision, is written for the professionals who specify exterior colour, but every homeowner choosing a colour this summer should read it:

✔ Why lighter colours always outlast darker ones in the same paint. White is the most sun-stable pigment. Reds, oranges and yellows fade first.
✔ Why a standard factory colour lasts longer than a bold colour mixed at the counter, and what that means for the wall that faces the street.
✔ Why dark walls crack sooner. They run hotter, so the wall moves more every day and the paint film has to keep up.
✔ Why bright colours take more coats to cover, and why stretching the tin to save one is the wrong fix.

Painting outside in October? The weather is on your side, as long as you do not let the sun set the schedule.

Paint that goes onto a wall baking in full sun dries too fast. It can skin before it levels, show lap marks and brush marks, and not bond as well as it should. Here is how to avoid it.

✔ Follow the shade. Start on the walls the sun has not reached yet and move around the house as it does.
✔ Do the north and west walls in the morning. They get the hardest afternoon sun.
✔ Touch the wall. If it feels hot to the back of your hand, wait.
✔ Check the forecast. Most exterior paints need a dry window after application, so avoid afternoons with storms on the way.
✔ Respect the recoat time on the tin. Hot days speed things up, but do not rush the second coat.

Your roof takes more sun than any other part of the house. It is also the part most people only look at when it starts leaking.

October is a good month to check it. The winter rain is behind us, and summer storms are still ahead.

What to look for:

✔ Faded, patchy colour on tiles or sheeting
✔ Green or black growth on cement tiles
✔ Rust spots on galvanised sheeting, especially at overlaps and screws
✔ Paint that is peeling or lifting

The walls get all the attention. The gutters, fascias and garage door are what make a house look tired.

They take the same sun as your walls, often more, and because they are metal or timber the paint on them works harder. Once the gloss goes, rust and water are not far behind.

✔ Look for chalky, dull paint on gutters and downpipes
✔ Check the undersides of fascias for peeling
