El Shaddai Music, Theatre and Arts Centre: designing in section to create a flexible, performance hall.

With the walls kept deliberately solid, light and ventilation are introduced from above. A light shaft brings soft, diffused daylight into the volume while enabling natural ventilation, and can be fully closed with external shutters when blackout conditions are required.

A simple sectional move that allows the hall to shift between everyday school use and performance.

We’re pleased to share that Apex Stellenbosch has been shortlisted for the 2026 SCAPE Awards in the Education category.

The project transforms an existing agricultural shed and processing building into a contemporary learning environment, working with the character and constraints of the existing structures to create a new school campus.

Kuilsrivier Safe Space begins with the adaptive reuse of a familiar urban type: the corner grocer.

Once an active part of the neighbourhood, the building had become abandoned and disconnected from the public realm. The design responds by re-establishing its civic presence within the Kuilsrivier Station precinct.

The existing corner is reinstated as the primary point of entry and spatial hierarchy. The adjoining façades are drawn back to create a more generous threshold, incorporating street-facing seating, landscaping and a dignified place to arrive, wait and gather.

Within the constrained footprint, the planning follows a restrained and pragmatic approach, accommodating a complex programme while prioritising spatial clarity, natural light and an intuitive sequence of movement.

The project treats reuse not simply as the retention of an existing structure, but as an opportunity to repair its relationship with the street and support a renewed sense of dignity, safety and belonging.

Site photos from Conradie Park, with the high school and admin buildings scheduled for completion by the end of the year. Once complete, the campus will accommodate 1,800 learners.

Artworks in the classrooms at Apex Stellenbosch, illustrated by Salome Wessels.

Integrated into the everyday learning environment, the artworks contribute to a sense of identity and orientation within the school. They support spaces that are both practical and imaginative, adding a considered visual layer to the classrooms and reinforcing the relationship between learning, place and visual storytelling.

On Restraint and Dialogue: Calling Academy Paarl (Phase 1)

Architecture as a conversation over time. The new intervention establishes a quiet spatial dialogue with the site’s historic 1854 rural schoolhouse. Rather than competing with the original fabric, the new footprint is positioned to activate the rear of the historical building, transforming a leftover boundary into a functional public square. By utilizing an understated, muted facade that retreats behind an existing canopy of trees, the new structure allows the historical volume to maintain its primacy while establishing a fresh spatial syntax for the expanding campus.
