Three things most property owners do not know about storm damage claims:

1. You do not have to accept the insurer's initial assessment. You are entitled to your own professional assessment, and it can significantly change the outcome of your claim.

2. "Patch and repair" is not always the right answer. Depending on the extent of damage, a full reinstatement may cost similar amounts and give you a substantially better result.

3. Getting multiple contractor quotes is not the same as a professional QS assessment. One is a price. The other is a document.

Getting a contractor in quickly feels like the right move. In most cases, it is the second move. The first move is documentation.

Here is why: your insurance claim is valued based on the evidence you present. A professionally prepared damage assessment, prepared by a qualified Quantity Surveyor, gives you a defensible scope of damage, a costed reinstatement estimate, and a document that holds up when the insurer's assessor arrives.

Skipping this step can mean an underpaid claim, disputed scope, or reinstatement work that does not fully cover what was lost.
