Set within the Sussex countryside, the house is a layered and deeply personal restoration for our wonderful client, interior designer . Working closely together, we've balanced inherited character with contemporary interventions and considered craftsmanship throughout. Seeing Harriet's glorious interiors come to life had been such a joy.

A huge thank you to everyone involved.

This once uninspiring Edwardian house in West Sussex has been carefully reworked into a characterful family farmhouse, retaining original stonework while introducing a new gable, central entrance, and generous sash windows.

A thoughtful transformation, designed for modern family life.

What began as a crumbling, long neglected Georgian farmhouse has been transformed into a deeply personal family home in the Sussex countryside.

The Grade II-listed house was discovered almost by chance by our clients after two decades in the city. It was an impulsive move towards a slower, wilder way of life.

Working closely with the family, Tom Turner Architects approached the 1830s farmhouse with care and restraint. Archival research, the exposure of original floorboards and the reworking of former servant spaces informed a scheme rooted in local history, natural materials and long term adaptability. Everything was designed to be useful, not for show.

The house reflects a shared philosophy between us all, which is very special. It was a real pleasure working with the family on a home that is timeless rather than trend-led, tactile rather than precious.

Little corners of our house are starting to come together. I love how the afternoon sun enters this room, dappled by trees and old glass. The ochre walls hold both light and shade beautifully changing from warm yellow to almost brown. The colour is Muga from

The meaning of home.

A home is something that shapes the small moments of every day. The light that greets you in the morning, the way rooms open to each other, the comfort of gathering by the fire as winter sets in. We’ve been thinking a lot about the meaning of home in recent weeks, especially on the back of Tom’s recent TAG talk.

Ultimately, we design ‘homes’. It sounds simple, but it’s in fact very nuanced and personal. It’s about designing for these quiet rituals that we believe have a huge impact on the wellbeing and happiness of our clients.

Thank you!

To everyone who joined Tom’s recent TAG talk, thank you for your time, questions and for making it such an engaging session. It was a pleasure to share the development of our work from Tom’s early childhood memories of spotting Lutyens buildings on the drive between London and Sussex, to our inspirations and the fundamentals that shape our projects today.

If you missed it or want to revisit the discussion, the full recording is now available 🔗 link in bio.
