What a season we've had and finally the numbers are in. A little down on what I was hoping, but like the weather, quite a few were challenging.

Thank you to everyone that's commented and shown your support, trying out best to spread the word and show the work we can do to make good hedgerows for the future.

I'll be visiting some hedges over the summer to check out the regrowth (hopefully they will be 🤞🏻), so keep an eye out as I won't be posting content as much over the summer. Proper.

Do you have some geek moments when you're away? This hedgelayer does! 🤣 Join me on a tour, as I've spotted lots of historical hedgelaying in Shropshire, close to the Wales England border.

Here's a very big hedge that was in desperate need of some love. Not been touched for so long it was becoming a line of trees and the old hedgebank had pretty much disappeared.

Or job is to start the process of restoring the hedge and hedgebank. We lay over what we can to create a barrier for earth to be piled against it. This is the first step in what will need to be at least a 30 year restoration process.

As you can hear, I think Adrian has seen enough of massive hedges this winter 😂 Apologies if it hurt your ears.

The competition season is over for this winter and this intense run of 5 comps in 6 weeks has been rather productive! 3 wins, a 3rd and a zilch. Fortunate with some of lengths I drew but still need to produce my best work because the competition demands it.

Wonderful to be back at the Cotley competition on the Blackdown Hills after it missed a year. The competition hedges are first rate and the whole day is superb. Thank you so much to the organisers, the caterers and all those involved, a lovely event.

So the comps are over, but Melplash will be back in September....... 😁

Travelled up the M5 for the Wrington and Burrington hedge match to compete in the Champions Class. These guys are seriously good cutters so always a massive test. Didn't get the luck of the draw and my section just didn't have enough material to make the width required. Still very happy with my work despite not placing today.

A few Devon folk travelled up to compete and congratulations to Rob Sturmey, placing 3rd in the Open.

Thanks to everyone for putting on a great match, was great catching up.

Final match of the season next Saturday, which is sad that it's all over for another year.

BIt of hedge Folklore for you. So get back in the loft and put your summer coat away! Fools! 😂

Eh up? What's on yer then? A sensible hedge for a change! This one has been laid about 25 years ago, trimmed sympathetically and then let up ready to be loved again.

Well maintained hedges make stock barriers, wind breaks, summer shade, slow water run off, are incredible habitats for all wildlife AND are a joy to work on fire the hedgelayer. Simple.

Well, that was a tough day at the office for all involved, competitors AND judges. The hedge in the Open class was really variable for everyone, some having horrendous pieces mixed in with good pieces. Made it really challenging for everyone and for the judges to assess it fairly.

I was fortunate in that the really chunky section I had, I was able to get it where I wanted it and it didn't over power the rest of the hedge where I didn't have very much. On another day, a different judge would've picked a different hedge because there was some very good work on a very tricky hedge.

Thanks to all at The Blackdown Hills Hedge Association for the day. We hope all the 70 odd cutters enjoyed their day.

Hedgebanks! It's all about the quality of the hedgebank. We had the food and the bad on this section, which means the hedgelayer is set different challenges.

Can't believe how quickly this season has gone. Possibly at our last site for the season as the bird activity is really ramping up.

I love experiencing the changing of the seasons year on year. It really is special.

I've been hedgelaying for 20 years now but this job was just too big. Happy to admit that and call on someone with far more experience than me. is a legend in the cutting world.

Something for your Sunday. 😉

Final piece of urban hedgelaying this season in association with Greenbelt. This was an exceedingly over stood Hazel hedge in desperate need of some love. Hasn't been touched since before this became a development site and was just fields.
It's brilliant to have Greenbelt investing in sympathetic and regenerative methods of hedgerow maintenance, but also for investing in the hedgerows. By using hedgelaying, these hedges will rejuvenate and become amazing habitats well into the future.
