The bit you don’t see in the final room is often where the design really starts.

There are a lot of decisions behind this bedroom, but you wouldn’t necessarily know it from the finished space. The joinery was designed around the room, the furniture was scaled to leave the architecture breathing, and the greens and natural woods were introduced gradually rather than trying to make everything match.

That’s usually the difference between a room that looks decorated and one that feels considered. Every piece has a reason to be there, but nothing is shouting for attention.

It’s the part of the job you don’t see on Instagram, but probably the part that matters most.

A day in our studio can mean reworking a floor plan because the sofa isn’t sitting quite right, comparing five versions of the same fabric, or building a moodboard around one piece we’ve fallen in love with.

From a moodboard to a room they can actually grow into.

For Project Lion House, this children’s bedroom started with that beautiful leafy wallpaper, soft pinks, playful shapes and a few slightly unexpected details. We wanted it to feel imaginative without becoming too themed or overly “childish”.

You can see how those first ideas came through in the finished room, from the scalloped bedside table to the lighting, artwork and little touches that make the space feel personal.

The most interesting interiors are the spaces that reveal themselves slowly.

This project began with two very different design languages: the quiet restraint of Japanese interiors and the architectural permanence of a traditional London townhouse. On paper, they almost feel opposing. But in practice, they brought balance to one another beautifully.

Japanese design has always understood the emotional power of space. The importance of texture, shadow, natural materials, and restraint. London townhouses, meanwhile, carry history and structure in a way that instantly creates depth and familiarity. Bringing the two together became less about contrast and more about rhythm.

Throughout the home, we leaned into earthy finishes, organic forms, and tactile materials, allowing them to soften and ground the more traditional architectural details already present within the property. Nothing feels overly polished or performative. Every decision was made to create a sense of calm, permanence, and quiet luxury.

After years in renovations, we’ve come to believe that the most successful homes are the ones that don’t immediately try to impress you. They make you feel something first.

It’s usually the little things you don’t notice straight away that make the biggest difference.

The way a lamp sits beside a chair. The book left on the coffee table. The artwork that fills an otherwise empty wall. The cushion that brings two colours together.

None of these decisions are going to stop you in your tracks on their own. But take them away, and you’ll feel that something is missing.

You can make a kids’ room playful without making it colourful. For Project Lion House, we used a soft, neutral jungle wallpaper, then used green as the one strong colour in the room. It’s a much quieter way of bringing personality in. The wallpaper does the interesting part, while the green gives it enough contrast to stop the room feeling flat.

London and Dubai may both be luxury property markets, but renovating them couldn’t be more different.

While homes in Dubai are often relatively modern, many of London’s most prestigious properties are centuries old, each with its own character, history and unique challenges.

Last week, Sam spent time visiting some of our live projects across Mayfair, Kensington, Chelsea and Wimbledon, seeing first-hand how each one is progressing.

If you’re designing a room and everything is starting to look a little too coordinated, this is probably where we’d tell you to stop matching.

Some of the combinations we come back to most often are the ones that shouldn’t work on paper.

Carmine velvet and cool Carrara marble. A soft velvet headboard against a much more graphic panoramic wallpaper. Warm white walls with patterned tiles. Dove grey panelling with deep, textured green upholstery. The trick is finding the point where two very different materials bring something out in each other.

The marble gives the velvet a little more edge. The wallpaper makes the headboard feel richer. The tiles stop the white walls from feeling flat. That’s how you start creating a room with a point of view. Not by finding things that match, but by finding things that make each other more interesting.
