THE HIDDEN HOUSE

A house that does not try to blend in, it wants to stand out from the rest, grab attention and take in those glances from the street. This house is unapologetically unique with it’s form and intends to capture the intrigue of the passers by just like the client wanted it to.The scale of this luxury house stays hidden to an onlooker from the outside as it looks much smaller than it actually is but at the same time it is designed in a way that creates a curiosity to see it’s actual scale.
The site is highly contoured and starts off at a level 3m below road level and is sloping downwards as you go backwards. This luxury house was designed making use of these site contours thereby creating an interesting play of levels. The house looks like a 2-floored house from the front but is actually a 3-floored house when viewed from the private rear courtyard.
Apart from the multiple living, dining, kitchen and study spaces it accommodates 5 bedrooms and a home theater room along with a family pool space in the rear courtyard.

Set above the winding roads of Kannur, this home unfolds inward—shaped not by grids, but by volumes that shift and settle like quiet breaths.

Exposed concrete forms its bones—raw, grey, and unpolished—balanced by light, air, and scale. High ceilings and open voids soften the austerity, allowing stillness to move.

Where concrete yields, steel takes form—precise, slender, structural—becoming both frame and gesture.

At its centre, a singular flourish: a swooping staircase in teal-blue steel. Floating mid-air, it’s less a staircase than a moment of flight—a sculptural thread stitching the house together.

Lilies are often used to symbolise purity and tranquility, the lily ponds which surround this house exudes serenity which is intended to provide that much needed clarity and peace of mind to its inhabitants after the hustle and bustle of a busy working day. The client’s primary brief and highest priority was to have the house feel in synch with it’s surroundings and to always have that connect with nature.
The wife is a doctor and needed a consultation space which had to have a courtyard that is separated from the main landscaped spaces which can be accessed directly from the lateral road. The extended wall at the side serves this purpose though it seems like just a landscape element at first glance. Overall this 5 bedroom luxury residence houses multiple living spaces, dining spaces as well as lily ponds all around.

‘On the rocks’

When the clients first brought us to this breathtaking site, scattered with ancient boulders rising like sculptures from the earth, our instinct wasn’t to imagine the form of the house, it was to honour the rocks. To let them be the protagonists. To ask how a home could be woven into this land rather than placed upon it.

The conversation with the site began long before the drawings did. These rocks, with their monumental scale and quiet wisdom, told us where to step back, where to lean in, and where to simply let them be. Thankfully, the clients shared the same vision. And so On the Rocks was born, a retreat-turned-residence for a Bangalore-based family seeking silence, sky, and a slower breath just beyond the city’s edge.

With a landscape this dramatic, designing becomes less an act of invention and more one of listening. The site revealed its own choreography, guiding the placement of walls, thresholds, and courtyards. The 5BHK home unfolds through layered living, dining, and bar spaces that dissolve the boundary between indoors and out, allowing nature to script the experience.

Its material palette is drawn directly from the land - stone, earth, and textures that echo the terrain, so the home feels less built and more unearthed. A structure cradled by rocks, shaped by landscape, and ultimately defined by the dialogue between nature and architecture.
