💧 WEEK 2 — HOW WATER & WASTEWATER SYSTEMS WORK 💧

If there’s ONE topic that causes confusion in the tiny home world, it’s wastewater.

People hear:
“greywater”
“holding tanks”
“grease traps”
“pump-out systems”
…and instantly imagine a giant complicated nightmare 😅

But in reality?
Tiny home infrastructure can actually be surprisingly simple when explained properly.

This week’s free education sheet breaks down:
🚿 Greywater systems
🚽 Toilet holding tanks
💧 UV filtration
🚰 Pressure pumps
🛢 Grease traps
🚛 Pump-out servicing

No jargon.
No scare tactics.
No engineering degree required.

Just practical information from people who actually work with these systems every day.

Because education reduces anxiety — and informed people make better decisions.

We can flip a window and make it a door.

I say this because it is genuinely useful and because the look on people's faces when I say it is one of my favourite parts of the design conversation.

You have a wall. There's a window in it facing the garden. You want to step out to the garden directly from that space. You want a door, not a window. We make it a door. The structural work happens in the design phase, the opening accommodates it, and the result is a home that connects to its outside in the way that suits how you actually live.

The relationship between a tiny home and its outdoor space is one of the most important design questions we think about. A home that opens generously to a garden or a deck lives twice as large as its floor plan suggests. The threshold matters.

Custom openings. Door placement. That side door to the garden you always wanted. These conversations happen early — in the design phase, before the build starts. After the build starts, options narrow. Before it starts, options open.

So tell us early. Tell us everything.

The Little Ruru is for people who have thought carefully about what they actually need.

One bedroom. Single storey. Ten to twelve metres. No stairs. No mezzanine drama. Just a beautifully resolved, single-level home for someone who has looked at their life and said: I need a bedroom, a proper bathroom, a kitchen I can actually cook in, and a living space where I can breathe.

The Little Ruru is popular with two very different groups of people: twenty-somethings who want their first home and retirees who have finally — finally — decided to stop maintaining a house that was built for a version of their life that's long gone.

Both groups are right.

The layout earns every square metre. Storage built into every wall where it can be found. A proper 900mm vanity in the bathroom, not a handbasin bolted to a wall. Kitchen bench long enough to roll pastry on, if that's your thing.

It doesn't feel small when you're in it. It feels considered. Deliberate. Designed for someone who knows what matters to them and doesn't need the rest.

If that sounds like you — let's talk.

Someone left us a Google review this week and I'm going to share the whole thing because I think it says something important.

They wrote: 'We had been burned before by a renovation that went significantly over budget. I think we'd stopped believing that a quote was a real number. With Ruru the quote was exactly what we paid. Not a dollar more. I didn't quite believe it until the invoice arrived.'

Read that last sentence again.

They didn't quite believe it. Even at handover, part of them was braced for the surprise.

And there wasn't one.

That's what years of being let down by the construction industry does to people. It makes them expect to be treated badly. It makes them brace for the hit they've learned is coming.

Ruru's fixed price policy isn't complicated. It's just: what we quote is what you pay. But in an industry where that's apparently unusual enough to be the thing someone leads with in their review — I'll take it.

Your quote is your price. Full stop. Every time. No drama.

That's how it should work. We just actually do it. 💚
