The upstairs bathroom question.

Can you have a bathroom in the mezzanine of a double storey Ruru?

Yes. With planning. Here's the honest version:

It requires thinking about the drainage route — water has to go somewhere and routing plumbing from a mezzanine requires careful design. It requires structural consideration because the mezzanine is doing work and adding a bathroom load to it is not trivial. And it requires the right model — some configurations suit it better than others.

But it can be done. We are currently doing it. For a home going to Kerikeri. And for clients who want the mezzanine to function as a true master suite — bed, bathroom, complete privacy from the ground floor — it is transformative.

The mezzanine as a standalone living space. Your own bathroom up there. The ground floor as a completely separate zone.

That's not a compromise version of a home. That's a properly considered design for people who have thought about how they live and want the home to honour that.

LAND SEARCH — HAWKE'S BAY 🌿

We are searching for a beautiful rural site in the Hawke's Bay region for one of our lovely clients, Cat.

Cat is a qualified clinical counsellor relocating from Western Australia to New Zealand. She has a handcrafted timber tiny home on wheels being built right here in New Zealand, completing December 2026 — so she is planning ahead and wants to get the right site sorted well in advance.

She is looking for a peaceful rural setting, ideally with access to water, power and septic — though she is flexible and happy to discuss options. She would love a site that allows dogs (she plans to train a therapy dog down the track).

Cat is a quiet, professional single occupant — no parties, no noise, just someone who genuinely wants to put down roots in beautiful Hawke's Bay and call it home.

What she needs from a site:

Power connection (standard caravan pin plug)
Water access
Septic or holding tank option for wastewater
Dog friendly
Rural setting preferred but open to options

We delivered a Ruru home for a client to give to his daughter.

He'd been planning it for almost two years. Saving. Thinking. Looking at floor plans. Messaging me with questions at odd hours.

The daughter had no idea. She thought they were going to look at 'something on the property.'

The home was already in position when they arrived.

I heard about this from the client the day after. He said he watched her walk toward it not yet understanding what it was. Then she got close enough to see the little nameplate and the welcome mat he'd put down and she stopped and just stood there for a while.

He said he was trying very hard not to cry and that this strategy was entirely unsuccessful.

I told him that was the correct response and that I would have absolutely done the same.

Some of the homes we build carry weight beyond what's in the spec sheet. They carry a father's years of quiet saving. A parent's belief that their child deserves something good. That kind of love is in the timber whether we named it or not.

This is a good job. I mean that genuinely. This is such a good job. 🥲💚

Winter in a Ruru.

I want to talk about this specifically because winter was the thing I was most uncertain about. I came from a big cold home with poor insulation. Typical NZ 70s built. And yes, the roof leaked. Winter mornings in that house were a negotiation — warm bed, very cold floor, cold kitchen, the slow wait for the fireplace to make a dent in the room. No heatpump to be seen.

The first genuinely cold morning in my Ruru — properly cold, frost on the cars outside — I got out of bed and walked into my kitchen.

The kitchen was warm.

Not 'warm if you stand next to the heater' warm. Just warm. Room temperature. The kind of warm that means the thermal envelope of the home had held the heat from the previous day through the night.

I stood there in my socks thinking: this is what it's supposed to feel like.

The Bradford Gold insulation, the PIR roof panels, the double glazing, the timber framing — all doing exactly what they're specified to do. And the result is a home that doesn't treat winter mornings as the enemy.

Best thermal surprise of my life. And I didn't see it coming.
