1840 Farm

I moved into an empty New England farmhouse twenty years ago. Three generations of my family call 1840 Farm home.

Tending to the needs of an old farm has taught me a lot and I can’t wait to share it all with you! Over a decade ago, three generations of my family made the life changing decision to move from our home in Kansas to the Seacoast of New Hampshire. A few years later, we purchased what was then an abandoned farm and began the difficult work of bringing it back to life. It’s no coincidence that it is located a mere 100 miles from the dairy farm that my great grandparents proudly called home. We began to offer our products for sale in 2011 in order to help support our farm financially. We never imagined that doing so would also support our family on a much deeper level. When our customers tell us how much they love our products and look forward to reading about our farm, it reminds us that our journey is not limited to those of us physically living here at 1840 Farm. Instead, it is made richer by inviting all of them to take part in our daily adventures no matter where they might call home. Interacting with the members of the 1840 Farm Community online on a daily basis only reinforces that belief. I love reading about their experiences as much as I enjoy sharing mine. It was completely dark by 5:00pm here, so we gathered around the dinner table a bit earlier than usual. I made chicken skewers in the air fryer which made everyone happy including me.

I haven’t perfected the recipe yet, but it’s close to being ready to share. It’s simple and has been a staple the last few months. If I had known how delicious and flavorful this chicken breast would be, I would have given in and bought an air fryer sooner!

Fall really is the most beautiful season here at the farm. You simply can’t top these golden leaves set against a bright blue sky.

I see a long afternoon with the leaf sweeper ahead of me. Until then, I plan to enjoy how beautiful they are while watching them fall to the ground below.

As predicted, I have moved from one knitting project to the next, or at least returned to one. This cotton throw is going to take a long time to finish, but I am making progress row by row.

I’m sitting in the parlor room enjoying the sunshine streaming in the windows. It’s windy outside and each time a gust blows, leaves stream by as if it is raining colored leaves outside. It’s beautiful and peaceful, a perfect fall backdrop for a bit of knitting.

I just finished weaving in the ends of my knitting project. I’m so pleased with how this hat turned out. I had forgotten how much I enjoy doing color work, holding a color of yarn in each hand and using both as I work my way through a pattern.

I just might need to make another one. Or, I might design up a fresh pattern and make something else before returning to this one. As usual, I am already planning my next project moments after finishing this one!

The sights and sounds of fall here at 1840 Farm. Our sugar maple is making the most beautiful carpet of leaves. I look forward to them every year.

It’s a gorgeous 71 degrees here this afternoon. That calls for an iced coffee and some time on the front porch. Now for the big decision: do I sit on the front porch reading my book or working on my knitting project?

A video and post with the recipe for the homemade honey cinnamon syrup I used in this afternoon’s coffee will be coming your way soon. I am lucky in so many ways, one of them being that I have an adult child who loves coffee (and making these delicious homemade syrups) as much as I do. This one tastes so good that I can’t wait to share it with you!

It's that time of year again. Pumpkin bread is always a welcome sight in the fall in my kitchen, especially if I add a bit of dark chocolate before baking.

Same knitting project, a new beautiful fall day. Last time I had the good sense to bring a coffee out on the porch with me. I don’t know what I was thinking when I skipped that step today. I’ll have to fix that omission after a few rounds.
