1840 Farm

1840 Farm I moved into an empty New England farmhouse twenty years ago. Three generations of my family call 1840 Farm home.

Tending to the needs of an old farm has taught me a lot and I can’t wait to share it all with you! Over a decade ago, three generations of my family made the life changing decision to move from our home in Kansas to the Seacoast of New Hampshire. A few years later, we purchased what was then an abandoned farm and began the difficult work of bringing it back to life. It’s no coincidence that it is

located a mere 100 miles from the dairy farm that my great grandparents proudly called home. We began to offer our products for sale in 2011 in order to help support our farm financially. We never imagined that doing so would also support our family on a much deeper level. When our customers tell us how much they love our products and look forward to reading about our farm, it reminds us that our journey is not limited to those of us physically living here at 1840 Farm. Instead, it is made richer by inviting all of them to take part in our daily adventures no matter where they might call home. Interacting with the members of the 1840 Farm Community online on a daily basis only reinforces that belief. I love reading about their experiences as much as I enjoy sharing mine. Our Mercantile Shop contains handmade items that we make and use here at 1840 Farm. I hope that you will enjoy welcoming these products into your home as much as we enjoy sharing them with you. We’re making salt potatoes for dinner tonight. I had never made or eaten them until a few weeks ago. I’m sorry that it took me this long to have them because they are simple and so delicious. They’re going to be a staple here at the farmhouse because we all loved them.

Have you ever made or eaten salt potatoes?

My best laid plans went awry today. This discard will just have to wait in the refrigerator for another baking day soon. But first, I’ll clean up my mess and give it a little flour before tucking it away.

Do you keep a sourdough starter? Do you have favorite recipes to add discard to?

I made skillet dumplings with pork, cabbage, and mushroom filling for dinner tonight. I started making these in the spring when I saw someone making them on Instagram. Since then, we’ve been making them almost every week.

This style of dumpling is so much simpler than traditional dumplings. I love beautifully pleated dumplings, but I rarely make them because it takes me a whole day to. This preparation can be made from start to finish in less than an hour, especially when I have helping hands.

I love cabbage of all types, but there is something extraordinarily beautiful about savoy cabbage. The pattern on each leaf is unique and pronounced. I just picked up this head to use in our dinner tonight. It looks like a painting sitting here on the counter bathed in the light from the kitchen sink window.

I’ll be making skillet pork dumplings for dinner tonight. I like to add cabbage to lighten up the filling and add a little color. Of course, I just like cabbage, so it’s no surprise that I would add it to dumplings.

Most of the cabbage dishes I grew up eating as a child were tucked into the German recipes my grandmother made. The smell of cabbage cooking in a skillet can take me back almost 50 years to standing in her tiny kitchen.

Do you have a favorite way to prepare or eat cabbage? I am always looking for new ideas to put into recipes I make here at the farmhouse and I would love to hear how you prepare it.

Fish Haus in Kennebunk, Maine has been on my list of spots to visit for a few months now. I finally made it and it more than lived up to my expectations.

The space is cute and filled to the brim with a coastal vibe, perfect for their location. The staff was warm and friendly. They offer handmade pottery displayed as if you are at the local fishmonger which is adorable.

While their pottery was the draw for me to visit, I was pleasantly surprised to find so many other lovely items. I picked up a few pieces for the farmhouse and a holiday gift that I know will be loved.

The little sailor kitty craft kit came home with me. It’ll be perfect for stitching at night when I want a break from my knitting. I have a little paper boat metal sculpture that is dear to me and the sailor kitty will be perfect to display with it.

If you ever find yourself in Kennebunk, stop off at fishhausshop. You’ll be so glad that you did!

It seems like the perfect time to watch 9 to 5 and work on my knitting project. So that’s exactly what I am doing tonight. Penny Lane is snoring nearby making this my kind of quiet evening at home.

I remember seeing this movie as a kid. A few years later, my parents took me to Kemper Arena in Kansas City to see a concert. I remember watching Dolly Parton come out on stage and being transfixed. She simply lit up the arena, sparkles and all.

I always liked Dolly, long before I knew what a generous person she was. Now I know how fiercely she supported the right of people of every color, gender, and category to be their true selves. Add in the millions of books she delivered to children across the world and the scientific strides she helped fund, and it is impossible for me to put into words what an amazing impact she had on the world we live in.

I have seen a lot of Dolly tributes in the past week but one thought has stayed with me the most. People loved Dolly Parton just like they love other entertainers and celebrities. The difference is that Dolly loved us back. Not some of us, but all of us.

She was the best of us, a gift to the world. What a loss we will have to accept. I hope that we’ll all be inspired to be a little kinder, less judgmental, and more accepting of each other. Somehow, I think that’s one of best ways we can honor what she stood for.
