1840 Farm

1840 Farm I moved into an empty New England farmhouse twenty years ago. Three generations of my family call 1840 Farm home.

Tending to the needs of an old farm has taught me a lot and I can’t wait to share it all with you! Over a decade ago, three generations of my family made the life changing decision to move from our home in Kansas to the Seacoast of New Hampshire. A few years later, we purchased what was then an abandoned farm and began the difficult work of bringing it back to life. It’s no coincidence that it is

located a mere 100 miles from the dairy farm that my great grandparents proudly called home. We began to offer our products for sale in 2011 in order to help support our farm financially. We never imagined that doing so would also support our family on a much deeper level. When our customers tell us how much they love our products and look forward to reading about our farm, it reminds us that our journey is not limited to those of us physically living here at 1840 Farm. Instead, it is made richer by inviting all of them to take part in our daily adventures no matter where they might call home. Interacting with the members of the 1840 Farm Community online on a daily basis only reinforces that belief. I love reading about their experiences as much as I enjoy sharing mine. Our Mercantile Shop contains handmade items that we make and use here at 1840 Farm. I hope that you will enjoy welcoming these products into your home as much as we enjoy sharing them with you. It’s a quiet rainy morning here. In between the sound of raindrops on the chimney cap, I can hear the finches that are raising babies in our backyard singing. Penny Lane is snoring on the couch and I am catching up on a good book. I’ll take this sort of morning every day on repeat please!

We’re to the very end of peony season. I’m sad to see them go, but we’re about to have roses and hydrangeas in bloom and fresh berries to pick in the garden!

What’s blooming or getting ready to bloom in your garden?

Sometimes, you just want cake. Warm cake. Chocolatey cake. Yet there’s no cake at the ready on the kitchen counter and you just don’t have the time or energy to bake a cake.

I keep this chocolate mug cake mix in the pantry so that I can make a single serving of chocolate cake any time I want. It only takes minutes thanks to the microwave which means that you’re only moments away from warm, gooey chocolate cake!

I haven't made homemade kimchi in a few years, but was reminded of just how delicious it was today at lunch. It just might be time to make a batch. It's so flavorful and simple to make.

I know that not everyone loves kimchi. It's definitely an interesting flavor experience. How do you feel? Do you like kimchi? If you do, have you ever made it yourself?

You can find my recipe here:

I don’t remember when or where I first tasted kimchi. I do remember how taken I was with the flavor. As a person who loves sauerkraut and spice, kimchi was the perfect marriage of the flavor and texture that I so enjoy. The flavors were so interesting and complex that I assumed that making kimchi ...

Penny Lane and I are watching the NBA Finals game tonight. Well, she’s napping and I’m watching. I’m rooting for the Spurs to take it to game six so that we can have an extra game. It’s been quite a series so far.

Who are you rooting for?

This bee didn’t stay long, but I like to think m that it was busy moving to the nearby peonies and roses to gather more pollen. The lilacs are nearly finished for the season. I’ll miss their fragrance surrounding the farmhouse. Until next year…

Cold crab (surimi) salad with a bit of leftover macaroni, cucumbers, red peppers, and capers was the perfect sort of simple meal on this hot and humid day. I wanted something that didn’t require cooking or heating up the house and thus was it.

What’s on your dinner plate tonight?
