The Copper Elm

The Copper Elm A little bit art, a little bit DIY, a little bit everyday life, and a lot about learning how to take up space again. Time to change that. I’m glad you’re here.

Creating a community of women who spent way too much time wearing armor, and not enough time feeling seen. Hi and welcome to The Copper Elm!! I'm Sam, an artist, mom, and fixer of all sorts of things. What started with furniture painting and DIY projects has slowly grown into something softer and more personal...a space for creativity, handwritten connection, colorful homes, slower moments, and be

coming more fully yourself. I hope to be your reminder that beauty, creativity, and community still matter.

Want a peek into my brain? I write a to-do list and that gets me excited. I like seeing all the things written down, especially if I used a good pen while writing it. Then the surge of endorphins or whatever it is pushes me to get to work and I start tackling a project. Everything is moving smoothly until I am forced to step away. You can’t paint over wet stain so I had no choice but to let it dry over night. Unfortunately, by the next day, the excitement over that to-do list had dissipated and I no longer had any desire to finish it. At some point a month later I again get the urge to fix my life by tackling my to-do list and I’m able to move on to the next step, painting the letters. But then I realized I needed to go to the store to buy a top coat and well, the whole project disappeared from my brain. Here we are almost a year later and look at that….its done.

In other news, my doctor has determined my ADHD meds are not in fact working. 😆😆😆

If I’ve left you on read, don’t take it personally. I probably saw the notification and then spent 3 minutes contemplating how long it would take to read your text, formulate an appropriate response, and potentially start an entire conversation and then I panicked and put it off till tomorrow which then became next year. Sorry bout that.

But seriously, I know everyone has stuff to do, but it seems like some people can just tell themselves “I’ll deal with the rest of that tomorrow” instead of “wow you really failed at pretty much everything today so now instead of sleeping peacefully, you should probably just sit here and panic for the next five hours about all the ways you will be stressed out tomorrow”. I want to be that first kind.

Maybe it’s time I come clean with myself and realize my irritation with this whole “soft life” trend is that I actually do desperately want a life that allows that kind of vulnerability and awareness and gentleness. A life where I don’t need to be on alert all day every day. And maybe it’s also time to come clean about the fact that my entire postcard club is centered around this very idea and none of it relied on the artwork. Also, if it’s not obvious, the whole club is shifting and the direction is beautiful.

Which ones stand out to you? Can you see just by the artwork which classes I was more tuned into, more invested in, more dedicated to? Looking back there are clear indicators to me that I was ignoring. 💙
