Wall art doesn’t need to come in a frame.

Some of the most interesting walls begin with objects that were never intended to hang there. In this room, a collection of unexpected pieces creates movement, texture and a sculptural focal point above the bed.

If you love something, we can figure out a way to mount it. The best art is often the unexpected.

Cincinnati’s Fidelity Hotel had my attention long before it opened.

The restrained glimpses on Instagram suggested something more layered and conceptually different was coming to the city.

Over the past two years, my work has moved into hospitality design, with over twenty boutique stay concepts from concept through installation. Unlike residential design, hospitality has a short window to establish comfort, atmosphere & pov. It has to make sense & work immediately.

Rather than pop in, I booked a night..two weeks after The Fidelity opened to experience it fully.

It does not disappoint.

Historic crownwork, arches, carved details & the original brass Cutler mail chute coexist with something more modern.

Houndstooth, checkerboard, polka dots & florals move through burgundy, rose, to***co, green, cream, black, pale blue and ochre. Dark woods meet pale cane. Grey velvet cools warmer finishes. Reeded cabinetry, marble & brass add another layer. There are so many layers in the design work, but they work together perfectly.

Gwynne, Fidelity’s full service restaurant, lobby bar & lounge, carries the same vibe. We started there before checking in with cocktails & charcuterie. The board..the homemade pâté was exceptional. When I asked who was behind the kitchen: Brad Bernstein. Red Feather. Postmark. Dutch’s. Another layer made sense.

A smoked Old Fashioned with to***co bitters & marinated cherries followed. Our first stop became three visits to Gwynne within 24 hours. Cocktails, dinner & brunch…all perfection.

Throughout our stay, curious people moved through the space. It felt less like another hotel opening & more like people had been waiting for somewhere new to experience.

That matters.

Design in Cincinnati still leans very conservative & restrained. It is often polished & well considered. But there is a difference between good design & elevated design that takes a seat at the table. I prefer the latter.

Cincinnati has the architecture, history, artists, designers, makers and chefs. Fidelity feels less like an exception & more like a signal of where hospitality design may be headed next in Cincy.

The restrained glimpses on Instagram suggested something more layered and conceptually different for Cincinnati.

Sourcing. Meetings. Tours. Walk-throughs. Back to school everything…and then, just when I thought the week was winding down, a major postmodern vintage haul entered the picture ..but I love those kind of unexpected surprises✨ Happy Friday 🕺🏼
