This could be a record year for πŸ”₯ wildfires with the heat & dryness we've had this past winter. I'm attending a "Wildfire Resilient Landscaping Workshop for Landscape Professionals" in April, & I signed up just before the Hwy 115 fire broke out. Looks like a timely coincidence.πŸ’š Hit me up if you would like fresh eyes on your older landscaping & are considering a landscape revamp or renovation! It could help protect your HOME from fire! & Especially if you live in a "Wildland Urban Interface!"

Smoke from the 24 Fire burning south of us on Hwy 115 has increased rapidly in the last hour, which is why it’s so visible from across our city. You're likely smelling smoke as well. While this is understandably alarmingβ€”especially for those who remember past firesβ€”please know that at this time, there is no immediate threat to our community.

Even with the resources we have sent to help fight the 24 Fire, our city is fully covered with adequate fire personnel in place and ready to respond when our community needs them.

That said, we always want our community to be prepared.
β€’ Stay aware of official updates

We understand how stressful this can feel. Your safety is our top priority, and we are closely monitoring conditions and will share updates immediately if anything changes.

We are here. We are staffed. And we are ready.

As we move into the first weeks of March in Colorado Springs, gardeners can begin cutting back ornamental grasses.

We intentionally leave grasses standing through winter because their dried blades help protect the crown of the plant. Cutting them too early can expose the center of the plant and lead to the β€œdonut hole effect,” If there is nothing to protect the middle of the grass, winter snow and wind bring debris that collects in the middle. In the spring, the delicate blades of grass are not strong enough to push through this debris and are forced to grow around it. The resulting growth of the ornamental grass looks like a donut. Early March is the perfect time to trim them down before new spring growth begins to push up.

Xeriscaping vs Zeroscaping. What's the difference?πŸ€” I'm a professional who knows how to design it well & what plants can take Sun, Heat, drought, low/no water, etc.β˜€οΈ
●"Xeriscape"- from the term Xeric- low moisture; A landscape designed to reduce or eliminate water use through smart planning & design, soil improvements, limited turf, drought-tolerant plant selections, & smart use of mulch, resulting in an attractive, sustainable, eco-friendly, & low-maintenance yard.πŸ‘Yes please!
●"Zeroscape"- often a mispronunciation of the term Xeriscape, resulting in a misinterpretation of Zero plants, Zero water, Zero aesthetics, all rock, & Zero maintenence. This is False! Weeds often take over quickly & require more maintenance or a total redo, blowing or doubling your initial budget! Plus all the rock creates a Heat Island Effect, raising the temperature in your home & your yard, essentially frying any remaining trees & plants, especially if all irrigation was removed. No one wants this!πŸ˜‰

While at ProGreen, I attended an educational session on the "Wildland Urban Interface" and what we can do to create more FireWise Landscapes. I'm sharing pics of some of the presentation slides as I found them very helpful & informative. I know a lot of you also live in the WUI. Maintaining your property & landscaping is important. Going beyond regular Fire Mitigation, I'd love to help you make some design changes for a Landscape Renovation as well!!

I had the pleasure of attending ProGreen this year as an Associated Landscape Contractors of Colorado member. I attended 8 continuing Education Sessions, networked with countless green-industry professionals, attended the Women in Green luncheon, visited the EXPO trade show, & met some new people! What a wonderful event! I always enjoy opportunities to learn, grow, & evolve! Design is not static...πŸ˜‰
